The sanad shows which narrators transmitted the report from one another. The narrator names and their sequence form the sanad.

4. An Example of Matn

After the narrator chain comes this saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى’. Reason: This is the transmitted wording after the sanad, so it is the matn.

5. Matn and Its Meaning

The original transmitted wording is the matn. Its simple meaning is a translation. The matn and its translation remain distinct.

6. Sanad and Matn Are Not the Same
