6. Grammar Focus: The Rule of the Restriction Particle innamā

Rule 4: The restriction particle innamā The word إِنَّمَا combines two words: إِنَّ, a particle of emphasis, and مَا, called mā kāffah because it prevents the grammatical effect of inna. - When mā joins inna, it cancels inna's usual grammatical effect. The following noun therefore remains nominative rather than becoming accusative. - In meaning, إِنَّمَا creates restriction, limiting a statement to a specific meaning such as 'only.' It strongly emphasizes and identifies the intended point. Examples from the Hadith: - إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ -> Here, الْأَعْمَالُ remains nominative because mā prevents inna from making it accusative. The meaning is: 'The acceptance of deeds depends only upon intentions.' - إِنَّمَا شِفَاءُ الْعِيِّ السُّؤَالُ -> The cure for ignorance is only to ask questions.
