Lesson

1. In this lesson

Six short Hadiths connect this world and the Hereafter, siwak, the giving hand, backbiting, purification, and Quranic guidance. The Hereafter means life after death. Read each translation and its vocabulary, then explain the meaning in your own words. The familiar مِنَ can express different relationships: “from Allah” differs from “better than.” Teaching examples are separate from the Hadith text.

2. A comparison with this world

الدُّنْيَا سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِنِ وَجَنَّةُ الْكَافِرِ (رواه مسلم) Translation This world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الدُّنْيَاthis world; the present life سِجْنُprison الْمُؤْمِنِthe believer وَجَنَّةُand a paradise الْكَافِرِthe disbeliever سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِنِ means “the believer’s prison,” and جَنَّةُ الْكَافِرِ means “the disbeliever’s paradise.” This relationship between the words gives the phrases their meaning. وَ means “and.” Understand the comparison in relation to the Hereafter, as explained next.

3. A prison in what sense?

This does not describe every person’s present circumstances. The believer hopes for the spaciousness and blessings of the Hereafter; this world is limited in comparison. The disbeliever desires to remain in this world and obtain its pleasures. Teaching example: a believer having a comfortable home does not contradict the Hadith. A good home is still within the limits of this world. A disbeliever suffering in this life does not mean the Hadith promised them constant comfort. “Prison” here does not require living in a literal jail.

4. Two benefits of siwak

السِّوَاكُ مَطْهَرَةٌ لِلْفَمِ وَمَرْضَاةٌ لِلرَّبِّ (رواه البيهقي) Translation Siwak is a means of cleansing the mouth and pleasing the Lord. Arabic word or phraseMeaning السِّوَاكُsiwak; using a tooth-cleaning stick مَطْهَرَةٌa means of cleansing لِلْفَمِfor the mouth وَمَرْضَاةٌand a means of pleasure لِلرَّبِّfor the Lord; here, the Lord’s pleasure In لِلْفَمِ, الْفَمِ means “mouth”; the opening لِ supplies the relationship “for.” In لِلرَّبِّ, الرَّبِّ means the Lord, Allah. Connect مَطْهَرَةٌ with cleansing the mouth and مَرْضَاةٌ with the Lord’s pleasure. These are two aspects of one action.

5. The giving hand

الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى (البخاري ومسلم) Translation The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْيَدُthe hand الْعُلْيَاupper; here, the giving hand خَيْرٌbetter السُّفْلَىlower; here, the asking hand Here the upper hand is the giving hand and the lower hand is the asking hand. الْيَدُ and الْيَدِ both mean “the hand.” In this comparison, مِنَ means “than”: خَيْرٌ مِنَ means “better than.” Its relationship here differs from مِنَ in “from Allah.”

6. The hand’s height or its action?

Teaching example: someone sits down to give money to a person in need. Even if their hand is physically lower, it is the giving hand in this expression. Someone may raise a hand to ask; height alone does not make it the giving hand. The lesson commends giving help. Asking is not identical to every act of receiving: accepting an offered gift and asking for something describe different actions. The comparison concerns the hands’ actions; it does not establish every person’s worth merely by how much money they have.

7. The seriousness of backbiting

الْغِيبَةُ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الزِّنَا (رواه البيهقي) Translation Backbiting is more severe than zina. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْغِيبَةُbackbiting; mentioning an absent person’s fault in a way they would dislike أَشَدُّmore severe, more serious الزِّنَاzina; unlawful sexual intercourse In أَشَدُّ مِنَ, مِنَ marks the comparison “more severe than.” The expression warns against treating backbiting lightly; it does not make zina trivial. Backbiting harms another person’s dignity. The next example explains how speech can affect another person’s right.

8. Speech can also cause harm

Teaching example: in a friend’s absence, someone mentions a personal weakness that the friend would dislike having discussed. Saying “I only spoke” does not remove the harm to the friend’s dignity. According to the explanation of this warning, Allah does not forgive this sin of backbiting until the person who was backbitten pardons the speaker. Repentance means turning away from sin and seeking Allah’s forgiveness. The point here is not to disregard the other person’s right; practical steps for seeking forgiveness in every situation are beyond this short lesson.

9. Purification and faith

الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ (رواه مسلم) Translation Purification is half of faith. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الطُّهُورُpurification; becoming pure شَطْرُhalf الْإِيمَانِfaith The ط in الطُّهُورُ carries a dammah. شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ means “half of faith”; شَطْرُ here is not merely an unspecified part. The Hadith expresses the great importance of purification. It is not an instruction to calculate a person’s faith as a score or percentage. This short expression does not list every form of purification.

10. The Quran: for or against

الْقُرْآنُ حُجَّةٌ لَكَ أَوْ عَلَيْكَ (رواه مسلم) Translation The Quran is evidence for you or against you. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْقُرْآنُthe Quran حُجَّةٌevidence, proof لَكَfor you; in your favour أَوْor عَلَيْكَagainst you Both لَكَ and عَلَيْكَ refer to “you,” but here they express opposite relationships: in your favour and against you. أَوْ means “or” and separates the two possibilities. Acting on Quranic guidance relates to evidence in one’s favour; failing to act relates to evidence against oneself. Teaching example: someone reads guidance about respecting others’ rights and corrects a wrong. Another reads the guidance but continues denying a right. Reading it does not by itself make their conduct equivalent.

11. Recap

Understand the prison comparison in relation to the Hereafter. Siwak is connected with both cleansing the mouth and the Lord’s pleasure. The giving hand concerns an action, not mere physical height. The warning about backbiting asks us to take another person’s dignity and rights seriously. شَطْرُ here means half. Acting on guidance matters in one’s relationship with the Quran. Explain in your own words: what relationship does مِنَ express in خَيْرٌ مِنَ? Which words connect with مَطْهَرَةٌ and مَرْضَاةٌ? How do لَكَ and عَلَيْكَ differ? Connect each answer with the whole Hadith.
