Lesson

1. Excessive Physical Actions (Amal Kathir)

وَالْعَمَلُ الْكَثِيرُ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي لَا يَشُكُّ النَّاظِرُ فِيهِ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ • Defining *Amal Kathir*: Excessive action (Amal Kathir) is defined as any physical movement of which an observer from a distance would have no doubt that the performer is not in a state of prayer. • Minor Action (Amal Qalil): If the distant observer is in doubt as to whether the person is praying or not, the action is classified as minor (Amal Qalil), which does not invalidate the prayer. • Use of Both Hands: Any action normally requiring the use of both hands (e.g., tying a turban or buttoning a coat) is classified as Amal Kathir and invalidates the prayer. • Use of One Hand: A brief movement performed with one hand is typically classified as Amal Qalil, provided it is not repeated continuously.

2. Eating, Drinking, and Swallowing Rules

وَأَكْلُ شَيْءٍ وَلَوْ قَلِيلًا... إِلَّا مَا كَانَ بَيْنَ أَسْنَانِهِ دُونَ الْحِمَّصَةِ • General Eating and Drinking: Inserting any substance from outside the mouth and eating or drinking it during prayer, no matter how minute the quantity, immediately invalidates the prayer. • Swallowing Food Remnants Between Teeth: ◦ Smaller than a Chickpea: If the remnant remaining between the teeth is smaller than a chickpea (Himmasah) and is swallowed, the prayer remains valid. ◦ Chickpea Size or Larger: If the remnant swallowed is equal to or larger than a chickpea, the prayer is immediately invalidated. • Swallowing even a single sesame seed placed into the mouth from outside during prayer invalidates it.

3. Turning Away from Qiblah & Responding to Sneezing

وَتَحْوِيلُ الصَّدْرِ عَنِ الْقِبْلَةِ... وَتَشْمِيتُ عاطِسٍ • Turning Chest from Qiblah: Turning the chest away from the direction of the Qiblah (without a valid juristic excuse) immediately invalidates the prayer. • Responding to a Sneezer (Tashmit): If a worshipper responds to someone who sneezes and says "Alhamdulillah" by uttering: "Yarhamukallah" (May Allah have mercy on you): ◦ Since this constitutes a direct address and response to human speech, it immediately invalidates the prayer. • Sneezing Personally: If the worshipper sneezes personally and mutters "Alhamdulillah" to themselves, their prayer is not invalidated, though remaining silent is preferred.

4. Answering Inquiries & Prompting Non-Imams

وَبِجَوَابِ مُسْتَفْهِمٍ... وَفَتْحِهِ عَلَى غَيْرِ إِمَامِهِ • Answering Inquiries: If a person asks the worshipper a question, and the worshipper responds by reciting a Quranic verse with the express intention of answering them (e.g., being asked: "What is your name?" and reciting: Ya Yahya khudil kitab), the prayer is invalidated. • Prompting/Correcting Recitation (Fath): Correcting a mistake in recitation during prayer: ◦ Prompting One's Own Imam: Correcting the mistake of one's own Imam does not invalidate the prayer. ◦ Prompting a Non-Imam: Correcting anyone other than one's own Imam immediately invalidates the prayer of the prompter.
