1. Obligatory Prayer Inside a Moving Ship

صَلَاةُ الْفَرْضِ فِي السَّفِينَةِ جَارِيَةً قَاعِدًا بِلَا عُذْرٍ صَحَّ عِنْدَ أَبِي حَنِيفَةَ • Position of Imam Abu Hanifah: Performing obligatory (Fard) prayers in a sitting posture inside a moving ship (Safinah Jariyah) without any physical excuse is legally valid. • Position of the Disciples: Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad hold that sitting is invalid if the worshipper has the physical capability to stand, unless they suffer from actual dizziness or fear falling. • Stationary Ship: If the ship is stationary (anchored at shore), performing obligatory prayers sitting without an excuse is invalid by consensus.

2. Qiblah Tracking in a Ship

وَيَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ، وَكُلَّمَا اسْتَدَارَتْ عَنْهَا يَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْهَا • Prerequisite of Qiblah: Unlike voluntary prayers on a riding beast, facing the Qiblah is an absolute prerequisite for obligatory prayers inside a ship. • Ship Rotation: As the ship rotates or changes its direction mid-prayer, the worshipper is legally required to continuously turn their body toward the Qiblah to maintain proper alignment. • If the ship rotates and the worshipper remains stationary such that their chest turns away from the Qiblah, the obligatory prayer is rendered invalid.

3. Legal Status of Tarawih Prayer

التَّرَاوِيحُ سُنَّةٌ مُؤَكَّدَةٌ لِلرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ، وَصَلَاتُهَا بِالْجَمَاعَةِ سُنَّةُ كِفَايَةٍ • Legal Status: The Tarawih prayer during the month of Ramadan is classified as Sunnah Mu'akkadah (strongly emphasized Prophetic practice) for both men and women. • Congregational Performance: Performing Tarawih in congregation (Jama'ah) in the mosque is Sunnah al-Kifayah (communal Sunnah). • Meaning: If some members of the community perform Tarawih in congregation in the local mosque, the Sunnah on a communal basis is fulfilled for everyone. However, if the entire community abandons the congregation in the mosque, all local residents share the sin of omission.

4. Rak'ahs, Salutations, and Rest Intervals

وَهِيَ عِشْرُونَ رَكْعَةً بِعَشْرِ تَسْلِيمَاتٍ، وَيُسْتَحَبُّ الْجُلُوسُ بَعْدَ كُلِّ أَرْبَعٍ • Total Rak'ahs: Tarawih consists of exactly twenty (20) rak'ahs, performed in pairs of two, concluding with a total of ten (10) salutations (Taslims). • The Rest Interval (Tarwihah): Sitting to rest after completing every four rak'ahs is highly recommended and praiseworthy (Mustahabb). • Duration of Rest: The duration of each rest interval should ideally equal the time spent performing those four preceding rak'ahs. • Activity During Rest: During this interval, worshippers have the option to remain silent, engage in glorification (Tasbih), perform voluntary prayers, or seek forgiveness.

5. Quranic Completion & Recitation Conduct

وَسُنَّ خَتْمُ الْقُرْآنِ فِيهَا مَرَّةً فِي الشَّهْرِ، وَلَا يَتْرُكُ الصَّلَاةَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ فِي التَّشَهُدِ • Quranic Completion: Completing the recitation of the entire Quran (Khatm) at least once during the month of Ramadan in Tarawih is Sunnah Mu'akkadah. • Community Laziness: Even if the congregation exhibits laziness or fatigue, the Imam should not abandon this emphasized Sunnah of Khatm merely to accommodate them, unless it causes severe aversion. • Recitation Precautions: The Imam must not omit reciting blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ during the Tashahhud sitting of the Tarawih units for the sake of speed, and must maintain clear, balanced pronunciation.
