Lesson
1. The Three Prohibited Times
وَعِنْدَ اصْفِرَارِهَا • Absolute Prohibition: Hanafi law designates three specific periods during the day wherein performing any obligatory (Fard) or necessary (Wajib) prayer is completely invalid: ◦ Sunrise: From the moment the sun begins to appear above the horizon until it rises high in the sky. ◦ Zenith (Istiwa'): Midday, when the sun is at its highest point in the center of the sky, until it declines. ◦ Sunset Yellowing (Asfrirar): When the sun turns pale and loses its brilliance before setting, until it completely disappears. • Prohibited Acts: Missed prayers (Qada'), necessary vows (Nadr), and prostrations of recitation are all invalid if performed during these three windows.
2. The Exception for the Current Day's Asr
إِلَّا عَصْرَ الْيَوْمِ عَيْنِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَصِّحُ مَعَ الْكَرَاهَةِ • The Single Exception: Within these three strictly prohibited windows, the law carves out only one exception: • The Ruling: If a person has failed to perform the afternoon prayer (Asr) of the current day, they are permitted to perform it during the yellowing of the sun (Asfrirar), and the prayer is legally valid. • The Disapproval: Delaying the current Asr to this time without a valid emergency is highly disliked and sinful; hence the text states: "فإنه يصح مع الكراهة" — "it is valid despite the disapproval." • Any missed Asr from a previous day (Qada') remains strictly invalid if performed during this sunset window.
3. Timing of the Cause for Funerals & Recitation
وَسَجْدَةُ آيَةٍ تُلِيَتْ فِيهَا، وَصَلَاةُ جَنَازَةٍ حَضَرَتْ فِيهَا، لَا مَا تُلِيَتْ وَحَضَرَتْ قَبْلَهَا • Law of the Cause: In Hanafi jurisprudence, the validity of performing a prostration of recitation or a funeral prayer (Janazah) during prohibited times depends on when the cause (Sabab) arose: ◦ Cause Arising During the Window: If the verse of prostration is recited during the prohibited window, or the deceased body arrives during it, performing the prostration or funeral prayer is valid, with karahah, when its cause arose in that time. ◦ Cause Arising Before the Window: If the verse was recited or the funeral was ready before the prohibited window entered, performing them during the prohibited window is highly disliked (Makruh). Worshippers must delay them until the window passes.
4. Disliked Times for Voluntary (Nafal) Prayers
وَبَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ • Scope of Nafal Disapproval: The restriction on voluntary (Nafal) prayers is broader than that of obligatory prayers. Performing voluntary prayers is legally disliked (Makruh) during the following windows: ◦ After True Dawn: Once Fajr Sadiq rises, no voluntary prayers are permitted except for the two established Sunnah rak'ahs of Fajr. ◦ After Fajr Fard: From the completion of the obligatory Fajr prayer until the sun has fully risen. ◦ After Asr Fard: From the completion of the obligatory Asr prayer until the sun completely sets. • Note: Missed obligatory prayers (Qada') can be made up during these times; only voluntary (Nafal) prayers are disliked.
5. Nafal Restrictions: The Sermon & the Iqamah
وَعِنْدَ خُرُوجِ الْخَطِيبِ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ، وَعِنْدَ الْإِقَامَةِ إِلَّا سُنَّةَ الْفَجْرِ • The Sermon Window: The exact moment the Imam comes out of his chambers to deliver the Friday or Eid sermon (Khuruj al-Khatib), performing any voluntary prayer becomes highly disliked until the obligatory prayer is concluded. • The Iqamah Window and the Fajr Exception: ◦ Once the call to stand for the obligatory prayer (Iqamah) is made, starting any voluntary or Sunnah prayer is disliked, except for the Sunnah of Fajr. ◦ The Fajr Sunnah Rule: If the Fajr congregation has started, but the worshipper is confident that they can pray the two Sunnah rak'ahs outside the main prayer rows and still catch any part of the congregation, even the final Tashahhud, they are permitted to do so due to the extreme emphasis of the Fajr Sunnah.
6. Nafal Restrictions: Eid and Hajj Mixtures
وَقَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْعِيدِ، وَبَعْدَهُ فِي الْمُصَلَّى، وَبَيْنَ الْجَمْعَيْنِ فِي عَرَفَةَ • Voluntary Prayers on Eids: Specific restrictions govern voluntary prayers on the day of Eid: ◦ Before Eid Prayer: Performing any voluntary prayer before the Eid prayer is disliked, whether performed at home or in the Eid prayer ground (Musalla). ◦ After Eid Prayer: Performing voluntary prayers inside the Eid prayer ground is disliked, though doing so after returning home is permitted. • The Hajj Congregation: When combining Zuhr and Asr at Arafat during Hajj, performing any voluntary or Sunnah prayers between the two obligatory prayers is disliked to maintain their direct chronological sequence.
7. Nafal Restrictions: Tightness of Time & Mental Focus
وَعِنْدَ ضِيقِ وَقْتِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ، وَمُدَافَعَةِ الْأَخْبَثَيْنِ، وَحُضُورِ طَعَامٍ تَتَوقُهُ نَفْسُهُ • Tightness of Obligatory Time: If the valid time window for an obligatory prayer has become so narrow that performing voluntary prayers will cause the obligatory prayer to be missed, starting voluntary prayers is strictly disliked. Protecting the Fard is the absolute priority. • Mental Focus Barriers: Starting a voluntary prayer is disliked during states that severely compromise a worshipper's tranquility and focus (Khushu'): ◦ Mudafah al-Akhbatha-yn: When actively resisting the urge to urinate or defecate. ◦ Presence of Food: When desired food is presented and the worshipper's heart yearns for it. ◦ Any state of distress or distraction that occupies the mind and strips the prayer of internal humility.
