Lesson

1. Defining the Excused Person (al-Ma'dhur)

• Al-Ma'dhur (Legally): A person suffering from an ongoing, uncontrollable physical condition that prevents them from maintaining Wudu, such as urinary incontinence (Salas al-Bawl) or chronic nosebleeds (Ra'af Da'im). • Causes of Excuse: ◦ Continuous, involuntary dripping of urine. ◦ Continuous, involuntary diarrhea (Istatlaq al-Batn). ◦ Continuous, involuntary release of gas. ◦ Continuous weeping of blood or pus from a wound. ◦ Istihadah (chronic, non-menstrual vaginal bleeding in women).

2. Establishing the Status of an Excuse

Source text وَشَرْطُ ثُبُوتِ الْعُذْرِ اسْتِيعَابُهُ وَقْتَ صَلَاةٍ كَامِلٍ... • Condition of Establishment: To legally establish the status of being an excused person (al-Ma'dhur), the condition must persist for an entire, complete prayer time (Waqt) such that the person cannot find enough dry time to perform a quick Wudu and pray the obligatory (Fard) prayer without the excuse occurring. • Practical Example: If the entire time of Zuhr passes, and a nosebleed does not stop for a single brief moment that would allow performing Wudu and praying the Fard of Zuhr, the person is legally established as a Ma'dhur.

3. Maintaining and Terminating the Excuse

Source text وَشَرْطُ دَوَامِهِ وُجُودُهُ فِي كُلِّ وَقْتٍ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ وَلَوْ مَرَّةً، وَشَرْطُ انْقِطَاعِهِ خُلُوُّ وَقْتٍ كَامِلٍ عَنْهُ • Condition of Continuation: Once established, the excuse is legally maintained as long as the condition occurs at least once in every subsequent prayer time, even if it is only a single drop of blood or urine. • Condition of Termination: The excused status is officially terminated if an entire, complete prayer time passes without the condition occurring even once. The person then returns to the default ruling of healthy individuals.

4. The Legal Ruling for Performing Wudu

Source text وَتَتَوَضَّأُ الْمُسْتَحَاضَةُ وَمَنْ بِهِ عُذْرٌ لِوَقْتِ كُلِّ فَرْضٍ • The Ruling: An excused person performs a single, fresh Wudu for the time of every obligatory prayer (Waqt kulli Fard). • Prayer Performance: With this single Wudu, they can perform as many Fard or Nafl (voluntary) prayers as they wish within that specific prayer time. • They are not required to repeat Wudu for every single prayer as long as that specific prayer time remains.

5. Invalidation and Expiration of Wudu

Source text وَيُصَلُّونَ بِهِ مَا شَاؤُوا مِنَ الْفَرَائِضِ وَالنَّوَافِلِ، وَيَبْطُلُ وَضُوءُ الْمَعْذُورِينَ بِخُرُوجِ الْوَقْتِ فَقَطْ • The Moment of Expiration: The Wudu of an excused person is automatically invalidated strictly by the exit/ending of the prayer time (khurūj al-waqt). • Example: If an excused person performs Wudu during Zuhr time, the exact moment the Zuhr time ends and Asr time enters, their Wudu automatically expires, requiring a fresh Wudu for Asr. • Other Invalidators: Note that their Wudu is also broken by any standard invalidating event (such as passing gas or bleeding from a different wound) other than the established excuse.
