1. Adjectives inside an Idafah

An idafah contains a mudaf and a mudaf ilayh. An adjective placed after it may describe the mudaf, the mudaf ilayh, or—when two adjectives occur—one may describe each. رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْكَرِيمُ — الْكَرِيمُ describes رَسُولُ.

2. First Find the Described Noun

Do not decide from word position alone. Ask: Which noun does the adjective describe? Then check agreement with that noun. كِتَابُ الطَّالِبِ الْجَدِيدُ = the student's new book. The nominative الْجَدِيدُ describes كِتَابُ.

3. The Same Words, a Different Ending

Compare: كِتَابُ الطَّالِبِ الْجَدِيدُ — the new book of the student. كِتَابُ الطَّالِبِ الْجَدِيدِ — the book of the new student. The final vowel reveals the link: nominative الْجَدِيدُ follows كِتَابُ; genitive الْجَدِيدِ follows الطَّالِبِ.

4. Four Kinds of Agreement Still Apply

An adjective agrees with its own described noun in case, definiteness, gender, and number. It does not automatically copy the nearer noun. رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْكَرِيمُ: الْكَرِيمُ agrees with رَسُولُ. رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْكَرِيمِ: الْكَرِيمِ agrees with اللَّهِ.

5. How to Translate

First identify the noun described. In idiomatic Urdu or English, place the adjective with that noun even if Arabic places it after the whole idafah. رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْكَرِيمُ → Allah's noble messenger. رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْكَرِيمِ → the messenger of Allah, the Noble; here الْكَرِيمِ describes Allah.

6. One Adjective for Each Noun

When two adjectives describe different members, the adjective of the nearer mudaf ilayh comes first, then the adjective of the mudaf. رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْكَرِيمِ الرَّحِيمُ Here الْكَرِيمِ is genitive and describes اللَّهِ; الرَّحِيمُ is nominative and describes رَسُولُ.

7. Apply the Rule to Seven Phrases

Apply the same method to these seven meanings: تِلْمِيذُ الْأُسْتَاذِ الصَّالِحُ — the teacher's righteous pupil. تِلْمِيذُ الْأُسْتَاذِ الْمُجْتَهِدِ — the hardworking teacher's pupil. نِعْمَةُ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمَةُ — Allah's great blessing. نِعْمَةُ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ — the blessing of Allah, the Magnificent. نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ — Allah's kindled fire. قُلُوبُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الصَّالِحِينَ — the hearts of the righteous believers. تِلْمِيذُ الْأُسْتَاذِ الْمُجْتَهِدِ الصَّالِحُ — the righteous pupil of the hardworking teacher.

8. A Reliable Three-Step Check

1. Find the mudaf and mudaf ilayh. 2. Compare the adjective's case and other agreement features with each noun. 3. Translate the adjective beside the noun it describes. Important limitation: proximity alone is not proof; meaning and agreement must work together.
