Lesson
1. A Wider Range of Place Expressions
The previous level taught place words such as فَوْقَ, تَحْتَ and أَمَامَ. This level shows three further ways Arabic expresses place. - A single direction word may answer where: يَمِينًا — to the right. - A preposition may come before a place expression: فِي غَرْبِ الْهِنْدِ — in the west of India. - After certain verbs, a bounded place may come directly without فِي: دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ. We will read the verb and the complete phrase before deciding how the place is expressed.
2. Direction Words
These forms can answer in which direction? ArabicMeaningArabicMeaningيَمِينًاto the rightيَسَارًاto the leftشَرْقًاeastward / in the eastغَرْبًاwestward / in the westجَنُوبًاsouthward / in the southشِمَالًاto the left or northward, by context شِمَالًا needs context because it can express the left side or the north direction. سَارَ الرَّجُلُ يَمِينًا — The man went to the right.
3. A Preposition Before the Place
A place expression may include both the definite article and a preposition. عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ There is a watcher on the right and a watcher on the left. Quran example — Surah Qaf 50:17 - عَنْ is the preposition. Before الْـ, it is read here as عَنِ. - الْيَمِينِ and الشِّمَالِ are majrur after the preposition. - The two complete phrases identify the two sides.
4. Min With Other Place Words
تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ Rivers flow from beneath them. Quran example — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:25 - مِنْ gives the starting relation: from. - تَحْتِ identifies the lower position and is majrur after مِنْ. - هَا completes the relation: beneath them. These place words commonly occur with مِنْ. The preposition changes the case ending, while the complete phrase still expresses a spatial relation.
5. Compass Directions With Fi
When a compass direction identifies where something is located, it commonly follows فِي. الْبَحْرُ فِي غَرْبِ الْهِنْدِ The sea is to the west of India. - فِي is the preposition. - غَرْبِ is majrur and mudaf. - الْهِنْدِ is the mudaf ilayh. New example: الْمَكْتَبَةُ فِي شَرْقِ الْمَدِينَةِ The library is in the east of the city.
6. Bounded Places: With Fi or Directly
A noun such as مَسْجِدٌ, مَدْرَسَةٌ or مَكَّةُ names a bounded place. The usual pattern uses فِي: جَلَسَ الطَّالِبُ فِي الْمَدْرَسَةِ — The student sat in the school. After دَخَلَ (entered), نَزَلَ (stopped or alighted) and سَكَنَ (lived), the place can come directly without فِي and is mansub: دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ — I entered the mosque. سَكَنَ زَيْدٌ الْمَدِينَةَ — Zayd lived in the city. The verb determines which construction is used.
7. The Quran Example With Uskun
يَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنْتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ O Adam, dwell, you and your spouse, in Paradise. Quran example — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:35 - اسْكُنْ is the command: dwell. - الْجَنَّةَ names the place of dwelling. - It comes directly after اسْكُنْ without فِي and is mansub. Do not add فِي to this quoted Quranic wording.
8. Qabla and Ba'da With a Named Reference
When the following noun is stated, قَبْلَ and بَعْدَ are mudaf and the following noun is mudaf ilayh. قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ — before dawn بَعْدَ الْفَجْرِ — after dawn They may also follow مِنْ: مِنْ قَبْلِ الْفَجْرِ — before dawn (with مِنْ) مِنْ بَعْدِ الْفَجْرِ — after dawn (with مِنْ) In this comparison, adding مِنْ does not change the basic before-or-after relation. It does make قَبْلِ or بَعْدِ majrur.
9. When the Reference Is Not Stated
Sometimes the noun after قَبْلُ or بَعْدُ is understood from context but is not stated. Use: مِنْ قَبْلُ — from before / earlier مِنْ بَعْدُ — from after / afterwards - In this form, مِنْ must be present. - قَبْلُ and بَعْدُ end in dammah. - The listener learns before or after what from the surrounding context. Do not confuse مِنْ قَبْلِ الْفَجْرِ, where the reference is named, with مِنْ قَبْلُ, where it is understood but omitted.
10. Haythu: Read the Context
حَيْثُ can express a place and may also be used for time. Its final dammah remains fixed. فَكُلَا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ So eat from wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree. - Here حَيْثُ answers from where?, so it expresses place. - The following clause شِئْتُمَا completes its meaning. - Do not change the ending of حَيْثُ. Recap: direction words, prepositional place phrases, direct bounded-place nouns, قَبْلُ / بَعْدُ, and حَيْثُ all require the full sentence for correct interpretation.
