Lesson

1. An and the Interpreted Verbal Noun

What will you learn? ● Understand why أَنْ is called a particle that gives verbal-noun meaning. ● Recognize أَنْ + فعل مضارع as a complete Masdar Muawwal. ● Apply the three Mudari Takhfif ending rules after أَنْ. ● Compare a Masdar Muawwal with an explicit verbal noun. ● Identify two sentence roles through complete examples.

2. Use the Ending Rules You Already Know

أَنْ is new, but the three ending changes are not. Before changing the verb, identify its group: ● First group: final dammah becomes fatḥah. ● Second group: the final inflectional nūn is removed. ● Third group: the feminine-plural ending has no visible change. This level adds the meaning and sentence use of أَنْ to that familiar map.

3. Why An Is Called Harf Masdari

أَنْ joins an imperfect verb and makes the complete expression carry verbal-noun meaning. Example: أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ means “I like to read.” The words أَنْ أَقْرَأَ together express the idea of “reading.” Do not call أَنْ alone a verbal noun. The meaning belongs to the whole combination أَنْ + فعل مضارع.

4. The Complete Combination Is Masdar Muawwal

Technical term: أَنْ + فعل مضارع is called Masdar Muawwal. In أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ, the complete part أَنْ يَذْهَبَ means “to go” or “his going.” Recognition method: ● Find أَنْ. ● Include the imperfect verb that follows it. ● Treat both words together as one verbal-noun expression.

5. How the Verb Ending Changes after An

Apply the same three-group map used for Mudari Takhfif. Group Ordinary imperfect After أَنْ Change First يَكْتُبُ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ final dammah becomes fatḥah Second يَكْتُبُونَ أَنْ يَكْتُبُوا inflectional nūn is removed Third يَكْتُبْنَ أَنْ يَكْتُبْنَ no visible ending change The particle comes before the verb; the visible grammatical change appears at the verb ending.

6. Read the Ending in Complete Sentences

Identify the group before explaining the change. ● أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ: first group; final dammah becomes fatḥah. ● إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تَذْبَحُوا بَقَرَةً: second group; the inflectional nūn is removed. ● نُرِيدُ أَنْ نَتَعَلَّمَ: first group; final dammah becomes fatḥah. ● يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يَكْتُبَا: the dual verb after أَنْ loses its inflectional nūn. The sentence meaning and the ending rule should both be understood.

7. Complete Examples with An

In each example, أَنْ and its imperfect form one Masdar Muawwal. ● أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ أَنْ نَعْبُدَهُ — Allah commanded us to worship Him. ● أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ — I was commanded to worship Allah. ● أَنْ تَذْبَحُوا بَقَرَةً — that you slaughter a cow; the second-group nūn is removed. (Al-Baqarah 2:67) ● عَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ — perhaps you dislike something while it is good for you. (Al-Baqarah 2:216) ● In الْإِحْسَانُ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ, the target construction is أَنْ تَعْبُدَ; كَأَنَّكَ contains a different particle. The Masdar Muawwal is the whole أَنْ + فعل مضارع unit, not the particle alone.

8. Masdar Muawwal and an Explicit Masdar

The same core idea can sometimes be expressed in two ways. First expression: أَنْ تَصُومُوا خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ — For you to fast is better for you. Here أَنْ تَصُومُوا is Masdar Muawwal. Equivalent expression: صِيَامُكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ — Your fasting is better for you. Here صِيَامُكُمْ is an explicit verbal noun. The wording changes, but the central meaning remains.

9. A Second Replacement Example

Replace the whole Masdar Muawwal, not only أَنْ. ● أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ — I want to go forth in Allah’s path. ● أُرِيدُ الْخُرُوجَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ — I want to go forth in Allah’s path. The complete أَنْ أَخْرُجَ is replaced by the explicit verbal noun الْخُرُوجَ.

10. Masdar Muawwal Works Like a Noun

Because it carries verbal-noun meaning, a Masdar Muawwal can occupy a noun’s place in a sentence. ● أَنْ تَصُومُوا is the topic (mubtada) in أَنْ تَصُومُوا خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ. ● أَنْ أَخْرُجَ is what is wanted in أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ, so it functions as the object of أُرِيدُ. A Masdar Muawwal may also serve as khabar, subject, and other noun roles. Those roles are not guessed from the phrase alone; the whole sentence determines the role.

11. A Reliable Recognition Method

Use four questions. 1. Is the particle أَنْ? 2. Which imperfect verb follows it? 3. Has that verb taken the correct Mudari Takhfif ending? 4. What noun-like meaning and sentence role does the complete expression carry? Common errors: ● calling أَنْ alone Masdar Muawwal; ● forgetting to include the verb; ● keeping the inflectional nūn in a second-group form; ● assigning a sentence role without reading the full sentence.
