Lesson
1. What Will You Learn?
By the end of this level, you will be able to: ● recognize an attached object pronoun after a verb. ● understand all 14 object-pronoun forms used in this lesson. ● use نُونُ الْوِقَايَةِ correctly with ي. ● apply the two special joining changes and analyze verb-related prepositional phrases.
2. An Object Can Be a Pronoun
An object is not always an explicit noun. It may be an attached pronoun. ضَرَبَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا — Hamid hit Mahmood. ضَرَبَهُ حَامِدٌ — Hamid hit him. In the second sentence, هُ means “him.” It is attached directly to the verb and is the object. The explicit subject حَامِدٌ follows the verb with its attached object.
3. Third-Person Object Pronouns
These six forms refer to someone or something being spoken about. The same written form can serve both masculine and feminine dual: context tells you which meaning is intended. Attached object Meaning Complete form هُ him (one male) ضَرَبَهُ هُمَا them (two males) ضَرَبَهُمَا هُمْ them (males) ضَرَبَهُمْ هَا her (one female) ضَرَبَهَا هُمَا them (two females) ضَرَبَهُمَا هُنَّ them (females) ضَرَبَهُنَّ
4. Second- and First-Person Object Pronouns
The next six forms address the listener; the last two refer to the speaker. Read the complete verb form instead of memorizing an isolated ending. Attached object Meaning Complete form كَ you (one male) ضَرَبَكَ كُمَا you two (males) ضَرَبَكُمَا كُمْ you all (males) ضَرَبَكُمْ كِ you (one female) ضَرَبَكِ كُمَا you two (females) ضَرَبَكُمَا كُنَّ you all (females) ضَرَبَكُنَّ نِي me ضَرَبَنِي نَا us ضَرَبَنَا
5. Why Does ن Appear in ضَرَبَنِي?
When the object is ي (“me”), Arabic places a protective ن between the verb and ي: ضَرَبَ + نِ + ي = ضَرَبَنِي This nūn is called نُونُ الْوِقَايَةِ. Its kasrah suits the following yā. In ضَرَبَنَا (“he hit us”), نَا itself is the attached object; no extra protective nūn is added.
6. Two Joining Changes
With third-person masculine plural: ضَرَبُوا حَامِدًا becomes ضَرَبُوهُ. The final written alif of ضَرَبُوا is not written before the attached object. With second-person masculine plural: ضَرَبْتُمْ حَامِدًا becomes ضَرَبْتُمُوهُ. The ending is linked as تُمُو before هُ. Say each pair aloud and notice that the grammatical roles remain unchanged.
7. Attached Object Before an Explicit Subject
When the subject is an explicit noun and the object is a pronoun, the object attaches to the verb first: ● ضَرَبَهُ حَامِدٌ — Hamid hit him. ● ضَرَبَكَ حَامِدٌ — Hamid hit you. ● ضَرَبَنِي حَامِدٌ — Hamid hit me. In every sentence, the colored ending is the object and حَامِدٌ is the nominative subject. Do not mistake the attached object for the doer.
8. Verb-Related Prepositional Phrases
A verbal sentence may contain a prepositional phrase that completes a relation such as place, direction, source, or instrument. With an intransitive verb it normally follows the subject; with a transitive verb it normally follows the object. Sentence Idiomatic meaning Relation جَلَسَ زَيْدٌ عَلَى الْكُرْسِيِّ Zayd sat on the chair عَلَى دَخَلَتْ فَاطِمَةُ فِي الْبَيْتِ Fatimah entered the house فِي ذَهَبَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ Ibrahim went from the mosque to the house مِنْ ... إِلَى ضَرَبَ أُسَامَةُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بِالسَّوْطِ Usama hit Ibrahim with the whip بِـ
9. Replace the Explicit Object Carefully
Step 1: Find the explicit object. Step 2: choose the pronoun with the same meaning. Step 3: attach it directly to the verb. ضَرَبَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا → ضَرَبَهُ حَامِدٌ نَصَرَ زَيْدٌ حَامِدًا → نَصَرَهُ زَيْدٌ كَتَبَ الطَّالِبُ الدَّرْسَ → كَتَبَهُ الطَّالِبُ The examples are deliberately simple: in each pair the receiver of the action stays the object, even though its visible form changes.
10. A Four-Step Check
1. Find the verb and its subject. 2. Look immediately after the verb for an attached object ending. 3. Read the ending by person, number, and gender. 4. Check special joining: نِي, ضَرَبُوهُ, and ضَرَبْتُمُوهُ. Then read any prepositional phrase as a relation connected with the verb. This keeps the sentence roles clear before you make an idiomatic translation.
