Cause of Ghayr Munsarif: Additional Alif and Nun
Read the bilingual lesson for Cause of Ghayr Munsarif: Additional Alif and Nun and test your understanding with a focused quiz.
Lesson
1. The Ending Alone Is Not Enough
Many Arabic words end in ان, but that appearance alone does not make them ghayr munsarif. This lesson concerns الف نون زائدتان: an additional alif and nun under specific conditions.
2. What Does زائدتان Mean?
زائدتان means that the alif and nun are not part of the root letters of the word. First recognize that they are additional; then check which of the three taught situations applies. The visible ending alone cannot prove this. In بُسْتَانٌ, the final ان belongs to the lexical form and is not the additional alif-nun meant by this rule, so the word remains declinable.
3. Situation 1: At the End of a Proper Name
When the additional alif and nun occur at the end of a proper name, the name is ghayr munsarif. عُثْمَانُ and نُعْمَانُ are the established examples. The two causes are proper-name status and additional alif-nun.
4. Situation 2: A Particular Adjective Form
An adjective ending in additional alif-nun is ghayr munsarif here when its feminine is not on فَعْلَانَةٌ. سَكْرَانُ → سَكْرَىٰ Because the feminine is سَكْرَىٰ, not سَكْرَانَةٌ, the taught condition is fulfilled.
5. Important Contrast: Not Every Adjective in ـان
Compare: سَكْرَانُ → سَكْرَىٰ: the feminine is not فَعْلَانَةٌ, so this cause applies. نَدْمَانٌ → نَدْمَانَةٌ: the feminine is on فَعْلَانَةٌ, so this adjective remains declinable through this test. The decision depends on the feminine form, not merely the visible ending ـان. Another qualifying pair is عَطْشَانُ → عَطْشَىٰ; its feminine is likewise not on فَعْلَانَةٌ.
6. Situation 3: A Noun with No Feminine Counterpart
The third taught situation is a noun ending in additional alif-nun that has no feminine counterpart. رَحْمٰنُ is the established example. It should be recognized respectfully as the taught lexical example; do not invent a feminine form for it.
7. The Three Conditions at a Glance

8. Case Endings Still Follow the Ghayr Munsarif Pattern
جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ - nominative with dammah. رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ - accusative with fathah. مَرَرْتُ بِعُثْمَانَ - without ال or idafah, genitive with fathah. The same basic case pattern applies to سَكْرَانُ / سَكْرَانَ.
9. Safe Recognition Checklist
Do not decide from ـان alone. 1. Confirm that alif and nun are additional. 2. Check whether the word is a proper name, a qualifying adjective, or a noun with no feminine counterpart. 3. For an adjective, verify its feminine form. 4. Apply the familiar ghayr munsarif case pattern only after the condition is established.
