Lesson

1. When Two Words Become One Name

A word does not become ghayr munsarif merely because another word stands beside it. In this lesson, تركيب is a cause only when two words combine to form one proper name.

2. The Governing Rule

A combination of two words is called تركيب. For منع صرف, the relevant form is a fused compound proper name, such as حَضْرَمَوْتُ or مَعْدِيْكَرِبُ. The two original words now identify one person or place.

3. Worked Example: Hadramawt

جَاءَ حَضْرَمَوْتُ - Hadramawt is nominative with dammah. رَأَيْتُ حَضْرَمَوْتَ - It is accusative with fathah. مَرَرْتُ بِحَضْرَمَوْتَ - Without ال or idafah, it is genitive with fathah because it is ghayr munsarif.

4. Why Two Causes Are Present

زَيْدٌ is one proper name but is not compound, so proper-name status alone does not make it ghayr munsarif. حَضْرَمَوْتُ has both causes taught here: proper-name status and composition.

5. Important Limitation: Incomplete Compounds Are Different

Incomplete compounds (مركبات ناقصہ) are excluded from this تركيب cause. Idafah is one clear example: عَبْدُ اللَّهِ has عَبْدُ as mudaf and اللَّهِ as mudaf ilayh. A descriptive phrase such as رَجُلٌ صَالِحٌ is another incomplete compound. Their words retain separate grammatical roles rather than fusing into one compound proper name.

6. Important Limitation: A Sentence Is Different

جَاءَ زَيْدٌ also contains two words, but it is a complete sentence: جَاءَ is a verb and زَيْدٌ is its subject. A sentence is excluded from the تركيب cause. Two words must form one proper name, not merely one sentence.

7. Three Forms, Three Decisions

حَضْرَمَوْتُ: two words fused into one proper name - تركيب cause applies. عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: idafah - this تركيب cause does not apply. جَاءَ زَيْدٌ: a sentence - this تركيب cause does not apply. The question is not “Are there two words?” but “Have they become one compound proper name?”

8. Safe Summary

For تركيب to cause منع صرف in this lesson: - the expression is a proper name; - two words have fused into that one name; - it is not an incomplete compound such as idafah; - it is not merely a sentence. Thus حَضْرَمَوْتُ and مَعْدِيْكَرِبُ qualify, while عَبْدُ اللَّهِ and جَاءَ زَيْدٌ do not qualify through this cause.
