Lesson

1. The Next Cause: Ta'nith

The previous lesson showed two causes combining. Now we study ta'nith (feminine status). This lesson distinguishes three routes: feminine alif, which itself stands for two causes; a proper name with round tāʾ, where proper-name status joins formal femininity; and semantic feminine proper names governed by the stated conditions.

2. Feminine Alif Stands for Two Causes

When الفِ تانیث is present, it alone stands for two causes. This lesson examples are حَمْرَاءُ (with alif mamdudah) and صُغْرَىٰ (with alif maqsurah). They are therefore ghayr munsarif without needing a separate second cause.

3. Do Not Judge Every Final Alif Alike

The rule is about an established feminine alif, not merely a similar-looking ending. Compare صُغْرَىٰ with فَتًى and مُصْطَفَىٰ: all end in a maqsurah shape, but the latter two are masculine. Shape alone does not prove feminine status.

4. Round Tāʾ and Semantic Femininity

A proper name ending in round tāʾ is ghayr munsarif when proper-name status combines with formal femininity, for example طَلْحَةُ. The person named need not be female. Semantic femininity without a visible marker is a separate route; its three practical conditions follow.

5. Case One: More Than Three Letters

زَيْنَبُ is a feminine proper name of more than three letters. Here femininity combines with the proper-name condition, so this lesson treats it as ghayr munsarif.

6. Three Letters: The Middle Letter Matters

سَقَرُ has three letters and its middle letter is vowelled; the taught rule includes it. For هِنْدٌ / هِنْدُ, Arabic permits both declension and diptote treatment. Thus this three-letter Arabic feminine name with a sakin middle is not obligatorily ghayr munsarif under the stated conditions.

7. Case Three: A Foreign Name

جُوْرُ, a city name in the established example, has three letters and a sakin middle. It is obligatorily ghayr munsarif here because foreign proper-name status supplies the additional cause. Compare: هِنْدٌ / هِنْدُ permits both treatments, while جُوْرُ is diptote by foreignness.

8. A Safe Decision Route

1. Established feminine alif stands for two causes: حَمْرَاءُ، صُغْرَىٰ. 2. A proper name with round tāʾ combines proper-name status with formal femininity: طَلْحَةُ. 3. For semantic feminine proper names, check the stated additional condition: more than three letters, a vowelled middle in a three-letter name, or foreign origin. 4. Avoid over-generalizing: هِنْدٌ / هِنْدُ permits both treatments.
