Lesson

1. A Verb-Like Shape Is Not Always a Verb

Some nouns and adjectives have a shape commonly associated with verbs. وزنِ فعل means that a noun or adjective is built on such a verb-like pattern. First identify whether the word is functioning as a noun/adjective; do not mistake an actual verb for this cause.

2. The Governing Rule

Keep the two routes separate. For a proper name, the relevant verb-pattern test is that the form is on a pattern particular to verbs or, where the pattern is shared, begins with one of the imperfect markers أ، ن، ي، ت; no feminine test is applied to a proper name. For an adjective, the qualifying أَفْعَلُ-type form must have a feminine not made with round tā (ة), such as أَحْمَرُ → حَمْرَاءُ.

3. Route 1: A Proper Name on a Verb Pattern

أَحْمَدُ and يَشْكُرُ are the established proper-name examples. Here the two causes are proper-name status and the pattern of a verb. The learner must use context to recognize that the form is a name, not an action.

4. Context Distinguishes a Name from a Verb

سَلَّمْتُ عَلَى يَشْكُرَ - here يَشْكُرَ is a proper name after a preposition; as ghayr munsarif it takes fathah in the genitive. يَشْكُرُ الطَّالِبُ مُعَلِّمَهُ - here يَشْكُرُ is an actual imperfect verb: “the student thanks his teacher.” The same unvowelled spelling can represent different grammatical functions; context and the final vowel distinguish them.

5. Route 2: An Adjective on a Verb Pattern

The established adjective examples are أَكْبَرُ and أَحْمَرُ. أَكْبَرُ → كُبْرَىٰ أَحْمَرُ → حَمْرَاءُ Their feminine forms are not made with round tā. Here the two causes are adjective status and the pattern of a verb.

6. Important Contrast: Round-Tā Feminine

Do not classify every adjective on an أَفْعَلُ-like shape automatically. أَحْمَرُ → حَمْرَاءُ: the feminine is not made with round tā, so the taught condition is fulfilled. أَرْمَلٌ → أَرْمَلَةٌ: the feminine is made with round tā, so this adjective does not qualify through the taught adjective route. The feminine form supplies the decisive contrast.

7. Important Contrast: Proper Name Alone Is Insufficient

أَحْمَدُ is a proper name on the taught verb pattern, so both causes are present. جَعْفَرٌ is also a proper name, but it is not on the taught verb pattern; it remains declinable. This proves that proper-name status alone is not enough for this route.

8. Case Application

جَاءَ أَحْمَدُ - nominative with dammah. رَأَيْتُ أَحْمَدَ - accusative with fathah. مَرَرْتُ بِأَحْمَدَ - without ال or idafah, genitive with fathah. The adjective follows the same basic pattern: هٰذَا ثَوْبٌ أَحْمَرُ / رَأَيْتُ ثَوْبًا أَحْمَرَ / نَظَرْتُ إِلَى ثَوْبٍ أَحْمَرَ.

9. Safe Recognition Checklist

1. Confirm that the word is functioning as a noun or adjective, not as an actual verb. 2. Identify the verb-like pattern and the required second cause: proper-name status or adjective status. 3. For the adjective route, check that the feminine is not formed with round tā. 4. Do not treat every proper name or every أَفْعَل-like adjective as qualifying. 5. After the condition is established, apply the familiar ghayr munsarif case pattern.

Practice questions

Question 1

What must be identified before applying the وزن فعل cause?

  • That the form functions as a noun or adjective on the relevant verb-like pattern
  • That every similar form is an actual verb
  • That the word ends in ان
  • That the word is plural

Question 2

Every form that looks like an imperfect verb is ghayr munsarif.

Question 3

Match each form with its function in context.

Question 4

Which two causes are present in أَحْمَدُ as a name?

  • Femininity and foreign origin
  • Proper-name status and the pattern of a verb
  • Plurality and composition
  • Adjective status and additional alif-nun

Question 5

Which pair correctly shows the adjective route?

  • جَعْفَرٌ → جَعْفَرَةٌ
  • أَرْمَلٌ → أَرْمَلَةٌ
  • أَحْمَرُ → حَمْرَاءُ
  • يَشْكُرُ → يَشْكُرَةٌ

Question 6

Why does أَرْمَلٌ → أَرْمَلَةٌ provide an important contrast?

  • Because every adjective is ghayr munsarif
  • Because it is a proper name
  • Because its feminine uses round tā, so the taught adjective condition is not fulfilled
  • Because it has additional alif-nun

Question 7

Sort the forms by the taught route.

Question 8

Complete the genitive sentence: مَرَرْتُ بِ____

  • أَحْمَدِ
  • أَحْمَدٍ
  • أَحْمَدُ
  • أَحْمَدَ

Question 9

جَعْفَرٌ is ghayr munsarif merely because it is a proper name.

Question 10

Which sentence uses يَشْكُرُ as an actual verb?

  • سَلَّمْتُ عَلَى يَشْكُرَ
  • يَشْكُرُ الطَّالِبُ مُعَلِّمَهُ
  • رَأَيْتُ يَشْكُرَ
  • مَرَرْتُ بِيَشْكُرَ

Question 11

Which unseen pair follows the same adjective route as أَحْمَرُ → حَمْرَاءُ?

  • أَعْرَجُ → عَرْجَاءُ
  • أَرْمَلٌ → أَرْمَلَةٌ
  • كَرِيمٌ → كَرِيمَةٌ
  • مُسْلِمٌ → مُسْلِمَةٌ

Question 12

Match each expression with the reason it demonstrates.

Question 13

Which statement is the safest summary?

  • Every actual verb is a ghayr munsarif noun
  • Every proper name is on the pattern of a verb
  • Every أَفْعَل-like adjective qualifies even with a round-tā feminine
  • The cause applies when a noun/adjective has the relevant verb pattern plus the required proper-name or adjective condition; actual verbs and the stated counterexamples are excluded
