Lesson
1. What Does Adl Mean?
Adl (عدل) literally means turning or changing. In this grammar topic it means that a word has been changed from an original form to another recognized form. The change alone is not enough: the word must also combine with a second cause such as proper-name status or adjective status.
2. Two Kinds of Transformation
There are two kinds. In actual transformation (عدلِ تحقیقی), the original expression is known, such as مَثْنَىٰ from اِثْنَانِ اِثْنَانِ. In assumed transformation (عدلِ تقدیری), grammarians treat the form as changed from an assumed original, such as عُمَرُ from عَامِرٌ.
3. Actual Transformation in Distributive Numbers
اِثْنَانِ اِثْنَانِ → مَثْنَىٰ means “2 at a time.” ثَلَاثَةٌ ثَلَاثَةٌ → ثُلَاثُ means “3 at a time.” أَرْبَعَةٌ أَرْبَعَةٌ → رُبَاعُ means “4 at a time.” The shorter forms do not merely name the numbers; they express distribution.
4. Do Not Confuse a Number with a Distributive Form
جَاءَ ثَلَاثَةُ طُلَّابٍ says that 3 students came; ثَلَاثَةُ is an ordinary number here. دَخَلَ الطُّلَّابُ ثُلَاثَ means that the students entered 3 at a time; ثُلَاثَ is the transformed distributive adjective. A similar number meaning does not make both forms grammatically identical.
5. Assumed Transformation in Proper Names
The established example is عُمَرُ, treated as transformed from عَامِرٌ. زُفَرُ is likewise treated as an assumed transformation from a form on فَاعِلٌ; in grammatical analysis this is زَافِرٌ. Here the two causes are proper-name status (علم) and transformation (عدل).
6. A Proper Name Is Not Automatically Adl
عُمَرُ is taught as a proper name with assumed transformation. خَالِدٌ is also a proper name, but this lesson has established no transformed original for it; it therefore does not qualify through the cause of adl. Proper-name status supplies only one cause.
7. Adjective Plus Transformation
The adjective-status + transformation examples are ثُلَاثُ، رُبَاعُ، مَثْلَثُ، مَرْبَعُ. ثُلَاثُ and مَثْلَثُ express “three at a time”; رُبَاعُ and مَرْبَعُ express “four at a time.” The cause pair is adjective status + adl.
8. Case Application with Umar
جَاءَ عُمَرُ - nominative with dammah. رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ - accusative with fathah. مَرَرْتُ بِعُمَرَ - without ال or idafah, genitive with fathah. This is the familiar ghayr munsarif case pattern; the new task is recognizing why عُمَرُ belongs to it.
9. Safe Recognition Checklist
1. Identify the original and transformed form where the lesson establishes them. 2. Decide whether the transformation is actual or assumed. 3. Confirm the second cause: proper-name status or adjective status. 4. Do not label every shortened word, numeral, or proper name as adl. 5. Only then apply the ghayr munsarif case pattern.
