Lesson

1. From Case Behavior to Its Causes

The previous level taught how a ghayr munsarif noun behaves. Now we begin asking why a noun belongs to this class. There are nine causes. Usually two recognized causes combine; this level studies one clear combination only: adjectival meaning + the verb-like pattern أَفْعَلُ.

2. Cause 1: Wasf (Adjectival Meaning)

Wasf means that a word describes a quality, such as colour or size. In أَحْمَرُ (red) and أَسْوَدُ (black), the words describe qualities. This adjectival meaning is one cause of منعِ صرف.

3. Important Limit: Wasf Alone Is Not Enough

Basic observation: أَحْمَرُ is an adjective and is ghayr munsarif. Contrast: كَرِيمٌ (generous) is also an adjective, but it is fully declinable and takes tanwin. Why? Adjectival meaning alone does not make every adjective ghayr munsarif. A second recognized cause must combine with it.

4. Cause 2 in This Pair: The Pattern أَفْعَلُ

The second cause in the taught pair is a verb-like pattern. The adjective أَحْمَرُ is on the pattern أَفْعَلُ, a pattern also associated with verbs. Likewise أَكْبَرُ follows أَفْعَلُ.

5. How the Two Causes Combine

In أَحْمَرُ: - it describes a colour: wasf; - its form follows أَفْعَلُ: a verb-like pattern. Because both causes are present, the taught adjective is ghayr munsarif: أَحْمَرُ — أَحْمَرَ — أَحْمَرَ. It has no tanwin and uses fathah in the basic genitive.

6. Compare Two Adjectives

أَحْمَرُ: adjective + pattern أَفْعَلُ; therefore ghayr munsarif in the taught rule. كَرِيمٌ: adjective, but not on this taught pattern; therefore adjectival meaning alone does not remove tanwin. The decision depends on the combination of causes, not merely on the translation “an adjective.”

7. Read the Ending in Context

- هٰذَا ثَوْبٌ أَحْمَرُ — nominative adjective: one dammah, no tanwin. - رَأَيْتُ ثَوْبًا أَحْمَرَ — accusative adjective: one fathah. - مَرَرْتُ بِثَوْبٍ أَحْمَرَ — basic genitive: one fathah because أَحْمَرَ is ghayr munsarif. The noun ثَوْبٌ/ثَوْبًا/ثَوْبٍ remains fully declinable; only its adjective follows the taught special pattern.

8. Do Not Judge from Shape Alone

A word beginning with alif does not automatically belong to the pattern أَفْعَلُ, and a word on a similar visible shape is not automatically an adjective. First identify its grammatical use and established pattern. This level does not provide the complete test for extending this classification to a new word; it establishes only the named examples أَحْمَرُ and أَكْبَرُ.

9. A Safe Recognition Route

1. In the established examples, identify the adjectival meaning. 2. Identify the taught أَفْعَلُ pattern. 3. For the established examples أَحْمَرُ and أَكْبَرُ, both causes are present; apply the taught ghayr munsarif behavior: no tanwin and fathah in the basic genitive. 4. Do not classify a new adjective merely from adjectival meaning and an apparent أَفْعَلُ shape; the complete conditions are studied separately. كَرِيمٌ demonstrates why wasf alone is insufficient.
