1. What Will We Learn in This Section?

● In this section, we will study an iḍāfah containing more than two nouns, called a complex iḍāfah. ● Using the example 'the door of Ḥāmid's house,' we will learn the structure and grammar of this construction. ● We will study the case rules for a muḍāf, an intermediate muḍāf ilayh that is itself a muḍāf, and the final muḍāf ilayh. ● We will learn to translate all 10 important exercise phrases into correct Arabic.

2. Concept and Structure of a Complex Iḍāfah

● Definition of a complex iḍāfah: ○ An iḍāfah with more than one muḍāf or muḍāf ilayh is called a complex iḍāfah, such as 'the door of Ḥāmid's house.' ● This phrase combines two constructions: 1. Ḥāmid's house -> بَيْتُ حَامِدٍ 2. The door of the house -> بَابُ الْبَيْتِ ● When they are combined, Arabic places the muḍāf first and the muḍāf ilayh after it. The middle noun functions at the same time as the muḍāf ilayh of the first noun and the muḍāf of the next noun.

3. Detailed Analysis of the Grammatical Structure

● Let us analyse 'the door of Ḥāmid's house': ○ Door (بَابُ): This is the first noun. Since it is a muḍāf, it has no al- and takes a light ending, a single ḍammah: بَابُ. ○ House (بَيْتِ): This middle noun is the muḍāf ilayh of the first noun, so it is genitive with a kasrah. It is also the muḍāf of the next noun, so it cannot take al- and has a light ending: بَيْتِ. ○ Ḥāmid (حَامِدٍ): This final noun is the final muḍāf ilayh, so it remains genitive: حَامِدٍ. ● The completed phrase is بَابُ بَيْتِ حَامِدٍ.

4. Practical Practice with Complex Iḍāfah (Part One)

● Study the spelling and case endings of the following complex iḍāfah phrases: ○ The supplication of Allah's Messenger: -> دُعَاءُ رَسُولِ اللهِ (دُعَاءُ is muḍāf; رَسُولِ is a muḍāf ilayh that is itself a muḍāf; اَللهِ is the final muḍāf ilayh.) ○ A sign of Allah's grace: -> عَلَامَةُ فَضْلِ اللهِ. ○ Frequent remembrance of death: -> كَثْرَةُ ذِكْرِ الْمَوْتِ. ○ Master of the Day of Recompense: -> مَالِكُ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ. ○ Obedience to Allah's Messenger: -> إِطَاعَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ.

5. Practical Practice with Complex Iḍāfah (Part Two)

● Let us practise special dual and plural forms: ○ The two hands of Abū Lahab: -> يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ (The final nūn of the dual muḍāf يَدَانِ is dropped, and أَبِي is a genitive muḍāf.) ○ The two feet of the son of Adam: -> قَدَمَا ابْنِ آدَمَ (ابْنِ is a muḍāf ilayh, and آدَمَ is a diptote muḍāf ilayh with a genitive fatḥah.) ○ The supplication of the daughter of Allah's Messenger: -> دُعَاءُ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ (a construction of four nouns). ○ The key to the room of Zayd's house: -> مِفْتَاحُ غُرْفَةِ بَيْتِ زَيْدٍ. ○ The houses of the Muslims of Madinah: -> بُيُوتُ مُسْلِمِي الْمَدِينَةِ (The final nūn of مُسْلِمِينَ is dropped because it becomes a muḍāf, producing the genitive form مُسْلِمِي.)
