Lesson

1. Conditional Nouns: One Pattern, Seven Openings

The preceding lesson used the particle إِنْ. This level introduces seven conditional nouns that can open a condition: مَنْ، مَا، أَيْنَ، أَنَّى، مَتَى، أَيٌّ، مَهْمَا. Each one supplies a meaning such as whoever, whatever, wherever, whenever or whichever. It introduces the condition, and the following clause gives its answer or consequence. مَنْ يَجْتَهِدْ يَنْجَحْ Whoever works hard succeeds.

2. What Each Form Points To

Use the meaning of the opening word to predict what the condition asks about. FormFunction hereSimple meaningمَنْpersonwhoeverمَاthing or actionwhateverأَيْنَplacewhereverأَنَّىplace/direction in this usewhereverمَتَىtimewheneverأَيٌّselectionwhicheverمَهْمَاunrestricted thing/actionwhatever; no matter what

3. People and Things: مَنْ and مَا

مَنْ points to a person; مَا points here to a thing or action. مَنْ يَرْحَمْ يُرْحَمْ Whoever shows mercy will be shown mercy. Condition: يَرْحَمْ. Answer: يُرْحَمْ. مَا تَشْرَبْ أَشْرَبْ Whatever you drink, I will drink. The unknown item is what is drunk, not who drinks it.

4. Place: أَيْنَ and أَنَّى

In this conditional use, both forms can introduce an unspecified place. أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُوا نَذْهَبْ Wherever you go, we will go. A simple example for أَنَّى is: أَنَّى تَذْهَبْ أَتْبَعْكَ Wherever you go, I will follow you. Outside this use, context can give أَنَّى other shades of meaning; do not force one translation everywhere.

5. Time and Selection: مَتَى and أَيٌّ

مَتَى opens a condition about time. أَيٌّ selects one member from a known or mentioned set. مَتَى تَذْهَبْ أَذْهَبْ Whenever you go, I will go. أَيُّهُمْ يَضْرِبْنِي أَضْرِبْهُ Whichever of them strikes me, I will strike him. Here هُمْ supplies the set: “of them.” In أَيُّ طَالِبٍ, the following noun supplies the set instead.

6. An Open Choice: مَهْمَا

مَهْمَا means “whatever” or “no matter what” in this pattern. مَهْمَا تَفْعَلْ أَفْعَلْ Whatever you do, I will do. مَهْمَا تَسْأَلْ أُجِبْكَ Whatever you ask, I will answer you. Both مَا and مَهْمَا can be rendered “whatever” here. Learn them as separate conditional openings; the whole sentence decides the best idiomatic translation.

7. The Jussive Pattern Continues

Changing the opening word does not remove the two-part conditional pattern learned with إِنْ. مَنْ يَرْحَمْ يُرْحَمْ Condition verb: يَرْحَمْ — jussive with final sukun. Answer verb: يُرْحَمْ — jussive with final sukun. أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُوا نَذْهَبْ Condition verb: تَذْهَبُوا — the inflectional nun is removed. Answer verb: نَذْهَبْ — final sukun. Identify each verb's own ending group; do not expect both to change visibly in the same way.

8. Choose by Meaning, Then Read Both Clauses

Use three steps instead of guessing from one word. First, ask what is unknown: a person, thing, place, time or member of a set. Second, choose the opening that expresses it. Third, mark the condition and its answer, then check the jussive ending on both verbs. Need a place? أَيْنَ تَجْلِسْ أَجْلِسْ. Need a time? مَتَى تَصِلْ نَبْدَأْ. Need a person? مَنْ يَجْتَهِدْ يَنْجَحْ.

9. Three Errors to Avoid

Meaning, category and verb ending must agree. ● Do not use مَنْ when the missing meaning is a place; choose أَيْنَ or the contextually suitable form. ● Do not translate مَتَى as “wherever”; it points to time. ● Do not leave the two imperfect verbs in their ordinary nominative forms. Write مَنْ يَرْحَمْ يُرْحَمْ, not مَنْ يَرْحَمُ يُرْحَمُ.

10. A Compact Reading Method

Read every example in four moves. First: translate the opening form by its function. Second: identify the condition verb. Third: identify the answer or consequence. Fourth: explain the visible jussive result on each imperfect verb. Then give one complete idiomatic translation that keeps the condition and consequence connected.
