Demonstratives inside an Idafah
Read the bilingual lesson for Demonstratives inside an Idafah and test your understanding with a focused quiz.
Lesson
1. A Demonstrative Can Point inside an Idafah
An idafah has a mudaf and a mudaf ilayh. A demonstrative such as هَذَا may point to either member. First decide: Which noun is meant by “this” or “that”?
2. When the Demonstrative Points to the Mudaf
If the demonstrative points to the mudaf, place it after the complete idafah. كِتَابُ الْوَلَدِ هَذَا Meaning: this book of the boy. The demonstrative points to كِتَابُ, not to الْوَلَدِ.
3. When the Demonstrative Points to the Mudaf Ilayh
If the demonstrative points to the mudaf ilayh, place it immediately before that noun. كِتَابُ هَذَا الْوَلَدِ Meaning: the book of this boy. هَذَا points to الْوَلَدِ.
4. Same Nouns, Different Target
Compare carefully: كِتَابُ الْوَلَدِ هَذَا — this book of the boy. كِتَابُ هَذَا الْوَلَدِ — the book of this boy. Important limitation: the presence of هَذَا does not by itself tell which noun is intended. Its position and the intended meaning work together.
5. Translate Meaning First
Use 3 steps: 1. Identify the mudaf and mudaf ilayh. 2. Ask which noun “this/that” points to. 3. Choose the Arabic position that shows that target. Do not translate Urdu word order mechanically.
6. Two More Clear Contrasts
بَيْتُ الْمُعَلِّمِ هَذَا — this house of the teacher. بَيْتُ هَذَا الْمُعَلِّمِ — the house of this teacher. سَيَّارَةُ أُسْتَاذِي هَذِهِ — this car of my teacher. هَذِهِ is feminine because the pointed-to noun سَيَّارَةُ is feminine.
7. Apply the Rule to Ten Meanings
Apply the same method to these ten meanings: وَلَدُ هَذِهِ الْمَدْرَسَةِ — the boy of this school. بِنْتُ الْمَدْرَسَةِ هَذِهِ — this girl of the school. رَبُّ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ — the Lord of this house. قَمِيصِي هَذَا — this shirt of mine. سَيَّارَةُ أُسْتَاذِي هَذِهِ — this car of my teacher. أَخُوكَ هَذَا — this brother of yours. دَرَّاجَتُهُ تِلْكَ — that bicycle of his. وَلَدُ الْمُعَلِّمِ الصَّالِحِ هَذَا — this boy of the righteous teacher. بَيْتُ أَخِي ذٰلِكَ — that house of my brother. مَسَاجِدُ الْمَدِينَةِ هَذِهِ — these mosques of the city.
8. Final Check and an Important Agreement Case
Ask: Does the demonstrative point to the mudaf or the mudaf ilayh? Mudaf target: بَيْتُ الْمُعَلِّمِ هَذَا. Mudaf-ilayh target: بَيْتُ هَذَا الْمُعَلِّمِ. Important contrast: مَسَاجِدُ الْمَدِينَةِ هَذِهِ uses feminine-singular هَذِهِ because a non-human broken plural is treated as feminine singular for agreement here.
