Lesson

1. From Recognition to Word Formation

In the previous level, you learned to recognize feminine alif maqsurah and alif mamdudah. Now you will see what happens to these endings when a noun is made dual or plural. - حَمْرَاءُ ends in mamdudah اء. - حُبْلَى ends in maqsurah ى. The ending does not always remain unchanged. The correct change depends on the kind of ending and, in some cases, on the origin or function of its final letter.

2. First Distinguish Mamdud and Maqsur

Ism mamdud is a noun ending in an extra alif followed by hamzah, اء, such as رَفَّاءٌ and حَمْرَاءُ. Ism maqsur is a noun ending in alif maqsurah, ى, such as فَتًى and مُصْطَفَى. Do not apply one common mechanical change to both kinds. First identify the ending; then use the relevant dual or plural rule.

3. Mamdud: Original Hamzah Remains

If the final hamzah of an ism mamdud is an original root letter, it remains when the dual is formed. اِبْتِدَاءٌ → اِبْتِدَاءَانِ The hamzah remains, and the nominative dual ending انِ is added. رَفَّاءٌ → رَفَّاءَانِ Again, the hamzah is retained before the dual ending. Recognition point: original hamzah is not replaced by waw in this rule.

4. Mamdud: Feminine Hamzah Changes to Waw

If the final hamzah is the feminine marker of alif mamdudah, it changes to waw when the dual is formed. صَحْرَاءُ → صَحْرَاوَانِ حَمْرَاءُ → حَمْرَاوَانِ Step by step: remove the final hamzah as a feminine marker, put و in its place, and add the dual ending. Thus حَمْرَاءَانِ is not the form taught by this rule.

5. Mamdud: When Both Dual Forms Are Allowed

Sometimes the final hamzah is neither an original root letter nor a feminine marker. Under the rule taught here, that hamzah may either remain or change to waw. سَمَاءٌ → سَمَاءَانِ The hamzah remains. سَمَاءٌ → سَمَاوَانِ The hamzah changes to waw. Both forms are valid here. This option must not be transferred to the previous two categories: original hamzah remains, while feminine hamzah changes to waw.

6. Mamdud Plurals

Two examples show the sound-plural rules. - A masculine mamdud noun may take the sound masculine plural: رَفَّاءٌ → رَفَّاؤُونَ. - A feminine mamdud noun may take the sound feminine plural: سَمَاءٌ → سَمَاوَاتٌ. Here the final hamzah changes to waw before اتٌ. For feminine adjectives describing colours or physical defects, this lesson separately shows a broken plural pattern rather than treating the sound feminine plural as the only result.

7. Colour and Defect Adjectives

For the feminine adjective weight فَعْلَاءُ, the following table displays the dual and broken plural across the three case states. FormNominativeAccusativeGenitivesingularفَعْلَاءُفَعْلَاءَفَعْلَاءَdualفَعْلَاوَانِفَعْلَاوَيْنِفَعْلَاوَيْنِbroken pluralفُعْلٌفُعْلًافُعْلٍ The table is useful because both number and case change at the same time. The core word-building point is فَعْلَاءُ → فَعْلَاوَانِ → فُعْلٌ.

8. Maqsur with Three Letters: Restore the Original Letter

When an ism maqsur consists of three letters, its final alif represents an original letter. In the dual, that original letter returns. عَصًا → عَصَوَانِ The returned original letter is waw. فَتًى → فَتَيَانِ The returned original letter is ya. Therefore, do not turn every three-letter maqsur ending into ya automatically; the dual reveals whether waw or ya returns.

9. Longer Maqsur Nouns: Change Final Alif to Ya

If an ism maqsur has more than three letters, change the final alif maqsurah to ya before adding the dual ending. مُصْطَفَى → مُصْطَفَيَانِ حُبْلَى → حُبْلَيَانِ The learner-friendly procedure is: identify a maqsur noun longer than three letters, replace final ى with ي, and then add انِ.

10. Sound Plurals of Maqsur Nouns

For the sound masculine plural, the final alif maqsurah is deleted while the fathah before it is kept: مُصْطَفَى → مُصْطَفَوْنَ. The preceding vowel is not changed to dammah. For the sound feminine plural, apply the same restoration/change used for the dual and then add اتٌ: - عَصًا → عَصَوَاتٌ: original waw returns. - حُبْلَى → حُبْلَيَاتٌ: final maqsurah changes to ya. The masculine and feminine sound plurals therefore do not use one identical operation.

11. Feminine Forms of Ism al-Tafdil

The following table also charts the feminine ism al-tafdil pattern فُعْلَى by number and case. FormNominativeAccusativeGenitivesingularفُعْلَىفُعْلَىفُعْلَىdualفُعْلَيَانِفُعْلَيَيْنِفُعْلَيَيْنِsound feminine pluralفُعْلَيَاتٌفُعْلَيَاتٍفُعْلَيَاتٍbroken pluralفُعْلٌفُعْلًافُعْلٍ The singular is written the same in all three case states; the dual, sound feminine plural, and broken plural show their respective case endings.

12. A Practical Decision Route

1. Identify whether the noun is mamdud اء or maqsur ى. 2. For a mamdud dual, decide whether the hamzah is original, feminine, or neither. 3. Original hamzah remains; feminine hamzah becomes waw; the third category permits both forms. 4. For a three-letter maqsur dual, restore the original waw or ya. 5. For a longer maqsur dual, change final alif to ya. 6. In sound plurals, follow the specific masculine or feminine rule instead of merely attaching an ending. First classify the ending; then transform it.
