Lesson
1. What Will We Learn?
● We will use إِنَّ to add emphasis to a nominal sentence. ● We will see how the subject becomes اسمُ إِنَّ and changes to the accusative case. ● We will distinguish لام الابتداء from لام مزحلقة. ● We will apply both forms to familiar nominal sentences without changing the intended meaning.
2. Emphasis with إِنَّ
Place إِنَّ at the beginning of a nominal sentence to state the message with emphasis. In this lesson, it is often understood as “indeed” or “surely.” Without إِنَّ With إِنَّ Meaning زَيْدٌ صَالِحٌ إِنَّ زَيْدًا صَالِحٌ Zayd is pious → Indeed, Zayd is pious الْعِلْمُ نَافِعٌ إِنَّ الْعِلْمَ نَافِعٌ Knowledge is beneficial → Surely, knowledge is beneficial
3. The Grammatical Change after إِنَّ
When إِنَّ enters a nominal sentence, the former subject becomes اسمُ إِنَّ and is accusative. The predicate becomes خبرُ إِنَّ and remains nominative in the basic pattern. Before After إِنَّ Role and case زَيْدٌ زَيْدًا subject → اسمُ إِنَّ; accusative صَالِحٌ صَالِحٌ predicate → خبرُ إِنَّ; nominative
4. Case Changes across Number and Gender
The sign of the accusative case depends on the form of the noun. The predicate keeps its nominative form. Original sentence After إِنَّ Change in اسم إِنَّ الرَّجُلَانِ صَالِحَانِ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَيْنِ صَالِحَانِ dual: ـانِ → ـيْنِ الْمُعَلِّمُونَ مُجْتَهِدُونَ إِنَّ الْمُعَلِّمِينَ مُجْتَهِدُونَ sound masculine plural: ـونَ → ـينَ الْبِنْتَانِ صَادِقَتَانِ إِنَّ الْبِنْتَيْنِ صَادِقَتَانِ dual: ـانِ → ـيْنِ النِّسَاءُ مُؤْمِنَاتٌ إِنَّ النِّسَاءَ مُؤْمِنَاتٌ singular case ending on a broken plural
5. Pronouns after إِنَّ
A detached pronoun becomes an attached pronoun when it serves as اسمُ إِنَّ. Read the whole form together, but recognise the attached pronoun as the noun of إِنَّ.
6. When the Noun of إِنَّ Comes Later
A prepositional phrase may remain before the noun of إِنَّ. The later noun is still accusative because it is اسمُ إِنَّ مؤخر. Before After إِنَّ Analysis فِي الْجَسَدِ مُضْغَةٌ إِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ مُضْغَةً مُضْغَةً: delayed noun of إِنَّ لِي جَارَانِ إِنَّ لِي جَارَيْنِ جَارَيْنِ: delayed dual noun of إِنَّ لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ فِتْنَةٌ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ فِتْنَةً فِتْنَةً: delayed noun of إِنَّ
7. Emphasis with لام الابتداء
لام الابتداء is an emphatic lām placed at the beginning of a nominal sentence or its opening noun. Unlike إِنَّ, it does not itself change the noun's case. Example What the lām does وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ adds emphasis; ذِكْرُ remains nominative وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ adds emphasis; الْآخِرَةُ remains nominative لَخَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ النَّاسِ adds emphasis to the nominal statement
8. When إِنَّ and the Emphatic Lām Occur Together
إِنَّ and the emphatic lām cannot both remain at the very beginning. إِنَّ stays first, while the lām moves to a later part of the sentence. It is then called لام مزحلقة (the displaced lām). With lām With إِنَّ and the displaced lām الشِّرْكُ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةٌ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً
9. Where the Displaced Lām Appears
The displaced lām may appear before the predicate. If a prepositional predicate comes first, the lām may appear before the delayed noun of إِنَّ. The lām adds emphasis; the grammatical case still comes from the word's role. Sentence Noun of إِنَّ Predicate of إِنَّ Position of lām إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ before the predicate إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لَآيَةً فِي ذَٰلِكَ before the delayed noun
10. Applying إِنَّ and the Displaced Lām
Keep the original meaning, make the noun of إِنَّ accusative, and place the emphatic lām on the appropriate later element.
11. Lesson Summary
● إِنَّ adds emphasis to a nominal sentence. ● The former subject becomes اسمُ إِنَّ and is accusative; the basic predicate remains nominative. ● A pronoun used as the noun of إِنَّ attaches to it: إِنَّهُ، إِنَّهُمْ، إِنِّي، إِنَّا. ● لام الابتداء adds emphasis without itself changing case. ● With إِنَّ, the lām moves later and is called لام مزحلقة. ● In إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً, the delayed noun آيَةً is accusative even though it comes after the predicate.
