Emphasis in the Imperfect: Light and Heavy Nun
Read the bilingual lesson for Emphasis in the Imperfect: Light and Heavy Nun and test your understanding with a focused quiz.
Lesson
1. Emphasis in the Imperfect Verb
What will you learn? ● Recognize the emphatic lām at the beginning and emphatic nūn at the end. ● Distinguish light نْ from heavy نَّ. ● Read all 8 light-nūn slots and all 14 heavy-nūn slots. ● Understand the established deletions and the separator alif. ● Apply the forms without confusing them with the earlier present marker or separate لَنْ.
2. Two Forms of the Emphatic Nun
For this emphatic construction, an emphatic lām comes at the beginning of the imperfect and an emphatic nūn is added at the end. ● Light nūn: نْ — sākin ● Heavy nūn: نَّ — mushaddad The heavy nūn is used more often, and this construction is a strongly emphatic style found frequently in the Qur'an. Do not turn that statement into fixed lexical meanings such as “light = moderate” and “heavy = extreme.”
3. Do Not Confuse the Three Lam Forms
● Earlier present-specific form: لَيَكْتُبُ — lām at the beginning, no emphatic nūn at the end. ● Emphatic form here: لَيَكْتُبَنَّ — emphatic lām at the beginning and heavy nūn at the end. ● Separate particle: لَنْ — written separately and not this construction. Read the whole form; the first letter alone is not enough.
4. Light Nun Has 8 Grammatical Slots
Light nūn is used in exactly 8 grammatical slots here. Six slots are absent: ● all four dual slots ● third-person feminine plural ● second-person feminine plural A slot means a person/number/gender position. Two different slots can share one written form: لَتَفْعَلَنْ represents both third-person feminine singular and second-person masculine singular.
5. Complete Light-Nun Paradigm
Person / gender Singular Dual Plural Third person masculine لَيَفْعَلَنْ — لَيَفْعَلُنْ Third person feminine لَتَفْعَلَنْ — — Second person masculine لَتَفْعَلَنْ — لَتَفْعَلُنْ Second person feminine لَتَفْعَلِنْ — — First person لَأَفْعَلَنْ — لَنَفْعَلَنْ
6. Changes in the Light-Nun Forms
Compare the original imperfect with the light-nūn form: ● Masculine plural: يَفْعَلُونَ → لَيَفْعَلُنْ — wāw and the inflectional nūn are removed. ● Second-person feminine singular: تَفْعَلِينَ → لَتَفْعَلِنْ — yā and the inflectional nūn are removed. The worked light form is also shown as لَنَسْفَعَنْ = لَنَسْفَعًا: كَلَّا لَئِنْ لَمْ يَنْتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ.
7. Heavy Nun Uses All 14 Slots
Unlike the light nūn, the heavy nūn is used in all 14 grammatical slots of the imperfect paradigm. Its ending contains the mushaddad nūn نَّ. Some surface forms repeat, but each person/number/gender slot still counts separately. Read the row and column together rather than counting only distinct spellings.
8. Complete Heavy-Nun Paradigm
Person / gender Singular Dual Plural Third person masculine لَيَفْعَلَنَّ لَيَفْعَلَانِّ لَيَفْعَلُنَّ Third person feminine لَتَفْعَلَنَّ لَتَفْعَلَانِّ لَيَفْعَلْنَانِّ Second person masculine لَتَفْعَلَنَّ لَتَفْعَلَانِّ لَتَفْعَلُنَّ Second person feminine لَتَفْعَلِنَّ لَتَفْعَلَانِّ لَتَفْعَلْنَانِّ First person لَأَفْعَلَنَّ — لَنَفْعَلَنَّ
9. Four Spelling Patterns to Notice
● Masculine plural: يَفْعَلُونَ → لَيَفْعَلُنَّ — wāw and inflectional nūn are removed. ● Second-person feminine singular: تَفْعَلِينَ → لَتَفْعَلِنَّ — yā and inflectional nūn are removed. ● Dual: يَفْعَلَانِ → لَيَفْعَلَانِّ — the dual alif remains; it is not a separator alif. ● Feminine plural: يَفْعَلْنَ → لَيَفْعَلْنَانِّ — nūn an-niswah remains and a separator alif appears before the heavy nūn.
10. Heavy-Nun Forms in Complete Sentences
لَيَنْصُرَنَّ — third-person masculine singular: لَيَنْصُرَنَّ اللَّهُ مَنْ يَنْصُرُهُ لَتَدْخُلُنَّ — second-person masculine plural: لَتَدْخُلُنَّ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ The endings identify different grammatical slots even though both sentences carry emphasis.
11. More Emphatic Forms in Context
12. A Reliable Reading Checklist
When reading an emphatic imperfect: 1. Find the emphatic lām at the beginning. 2. Check the ending: light نْ or heavy نَّ. 3. Identify the grammatical slot from the whole form. 4. For light nūn, verify that the slot belongs to the permitted 8. 5. For heavy nūn, remember that all 14 slots occur. 6. Check wāw/yā deletion, dual alif, or feminine-plural separator alif where relevant. 7. Translate the emphasis naturally; do not invent a fixed intensity scale.
