2. The Explicit Noun Subject Comes After the Verb
In this verbal-sentence pattern, the past verb comes first and the explicit noun subject follows it. Example: ذَهَبَ زَيْدٌ ● ذَهَبَ is the past verb: ‘went.’ ● زَيْدٌ is the explicit noun subject: the person who went. ● As the subject, زَيْدٌ is nominative. Read the order as: verb → visible doer.
3. Masculine Subject: Use the First Past Form
When a masculine explicit subject follows the verb, use the masculine-singular third-person past form before it. The visible subject may itself be singular, dual, or plural; the preceding verb remains in this first form. 4. Feminine Subject: Use the Fourth Past Form
In this level's exercises, when a feminine explicit subject follows the verb, use the feminine-singular third-person past form before it. Read the plural examples carefully, then compare the singular Fatimah example. 5. Pronoun Subject vs Explicit Noun Subject
Compare these 2 structures carefully. سَجَدُوا — ‘they (men) prostrated’ The doer is carried by the attached pronoun in the verb; no separate noun subject follows. سَجَدَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ — ‘the Muslims prostrated’ The explicit noun الْمُسْلِمُونَ follows as the nominative subject, so the preceding verb is the masculine-singular form سَجَدَ.

9. Practice: When the Doer Is Pronominal
ظَلَمْتَ — you (one man) did wrong; the attached subject pronoun corresponds to أَنْتَ. صَبَرْتُمَا — you two were patient; it corresponds to أَنْتُمَا. شَكَرْنَا — we gave thanks; it corresponds to نَحْنُ. جَلَسُوا — they (men) sat; واو الجماعة is the attached subject pronoun. These 4 answers use a pronominal doer, so no separate explicit noun subject is needed.
10. A 4-Step Translation Method
1. Find the action. Choose the correct past verb. 2. Find the doer. Is the pronominal doer understood from the verb form or attached as a pronoun, or is it written as a separate explicit noun? 3. If explicit, check gender. In this level's pattern, use masculine-singular before a masculine subject and feminine-singular before a feminine subject. 4. Put the explicit subject after the verb and keep it nominative. Try the method on these examples: ● ‘The students went out’ → خَرَجَ الطُّلَّابُ ● ‘The female students went’ → ذَهَبَتِ الطَّالِبَاتُ
