Lesson

1. Fa'ala Verbs - Part 1

What will you learn? ● Learn why a past verb on فَعَلَ does not force one present-tense weight. ● Read 15 past/present pairs accurately. ● Notice the middle vowel in يَفْعَلُ، يَفْعِلُ، يَفْعُلُ. ● Use selected pairs in short, clear sentences.

2. One Past Weight, Three Possible Present Weights

A verb whose past is on فَعَلَ does not have one automatic present-tense weight. Its present may be on: ● يَفْعَلُ — middle radical with fatḥah ● يَفْعِلُ — middle radical with kasrah ● يَفْعُلُ — middle radical with ḍammah The established usage of Arabic tells us which present form belongs to each verb. Therefore, learn the past and present as a pair.

3. How to Learn Each Pair

Take three small steps: 1. Read the past form: فَتَحَ — he opened. 2. Read its present partner: يَفْتَحُ — he opens. 3. Notice the middle vowel in the present: تَ, so its weight is يَفْعَلُ. Do not manufacture the present form by guessing. Read, understand, and practise the attested pair.

4. Pairs 1-5: Creating, Forgiving, and Patience

Past verb Present verb Idiomatic meaning خَلَقَ يَخْلُقُ he created / he creates جَعَلَ يَجْعَلُ he made / he makes غَفَرَ يَغْفِرُ he forgave / he forgives صَبَرَ يَصْبِرُ he was patient / he is patient فَتَحَ يَفْتَحُ he opened / he opens The five past verbs share فَعَلَ, but their present forms use all three middle vowels. This is exactly why each pair must be learned together.

5. See Fataha in a Sentence

فَتَحَ حَامِدٌ الْبَابَ Hamid opened the door. يَفْتَحُ حَامِدٌ الْبَابَ Hamid opens the door. In these two sentences, فَتَحَ is past, while context gives يَفْتَحُ a present reading. The core meaning “open” remains; in a future context, the same فعل مضارع form can carry a future meaning.

6. Pairs 6-10: Worship, Gathering, and Understanding

Past verb Present verb Idiomatic meaning عَبَدَ يَعْبُدُ he worshipped / he worships رَفَعَ يَرْفَعُ he raised / he raises حَشَرَ يَحْشُرُ he gathered / he gathers غَفَلَ يَغْفُلُ he became heedless / he becomes heedless عَقَلَ يَعْقِلُ he used reason / he understands Compare غَفَلَ—يَغْفُلُ with عَقَلَ—يَعْقِلُ. The first describes heedlessness; the second describes using reason or understanding.

7. Two Clear Applications

Raising: رَفَعَ حَامِدٌ الْكِتَابَ — Hamid raised the book. يَرْفَعُ حَامِدٌ الْكِتَابَ — Hamid raises the book. Prostrating: سَجَدَ الْمُسْلِمُ لِلَّهِ — The Muslim prostrated to Allah. يَسْجُدُ الْمُسْلِمُ لِلَّهِ — The Muslim prostrates to Allah. Each present form keeps its own attested middle vowel.

8. Pairs 11-15: Posture, Action, and Movement

Past verb Present verb Idiomatic meaning سَجَدَ يَسْجُدُ he prostrated / he prostrates جَلَسَ يَجْلِسُ he sat / he sits ضَرَبَ يَضْرِبُ he hit / he hits دَخَلَ يَدْخُلُ he entered / he enters خَرَجَ يَخْرُجُ he went out / he goes out جَلَسَ describes sitting, دَخَلَ entering, and خَرَجَ leaving. Keep these movement and posture meanings distinct.

9. Sitting, Entering, and Leaving

جَلَسَ الطَّالِبُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ — The student sat in the mosque. يَجْلِسُ الطَّالِبُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ — The student sits in the mosque. دَخَلَ الطَّالِبُ الْمَسْجِدَ — The student entered the mosque. يَدْخُلُ الطَّالِبُ الْمَسْجِدَ — The student enters the mosque. خَرَجَ الطَّالِبُ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ — The student left the mosque. يَخْرُجُ الطَّالِبُ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ — The student leaves the mosque.

10. Regroup the 15 Present Forms

Present weight Pairs in this level What to notice يَفْعَلُ يَجْعَلُ، يَفْتَحُ، يَرْفَعُ Fatḥah on the middle radical يَفْعِلُ يَغْفِرُ، يَصْبِرُ، يَعْقِلُ، يَجْلِسُ، يَضْرِبُ Kasrah on the middle radical يَفْعُلُ يَخْلُقُ، يَعْبُدُ، يَحْشُرُ، يَغْفُلُ، يَسْجُدُ، يَدْخُلُ، يَخْرُجُ Ḍammah on the middle radical This learning arrangement keeps all 15 pairs together while making the three present weights visible.

11. Do Not Confuse Meaning with Weight

Meaning tells you what the verb expresses; weight tells you how its letters are vocalized. ● غَفَرَ—يَغْفِرُ means forgiving. ● صَبَرَ—يَصْبِرُ means being patient. ● Both use يَفْعِلُ, but they are not synonyms. Likewise, دَخَلَ—يَدْخُلُ and خَرَجَ—يَخْرُجُ share a present weight while expressing opposite movements.

12. A Beginner's Check

For every new pair, ask: 1. Can I read the past form with its tashkeel? 2. Can I read the exact present partner? 3. Which middle vowel does the present carry? 4. Do I know the everyday meaning? 5. Can I use the pair in a short sentence? If one answer is unclear, return to that pair instead of guessing from فَعَلَ alone.
