1. What Will We Learn?

● We will distinguish yes/no questions from questions that ask for specific information. ● We will turn a nominal sentence into a question with أَ or هَلْ. ● We will choose the correct interrogative noun for a person, thing, condition, place, time, choice, or quantity. ● We will recognize how some interrogatives combine with prepositions: لِمَ، فِيمَ، مِمَّ، عَمَّ.

2. Two Kinds of Questions

3. Yes/No Questions with أَ and هَلْ

For a yes/no question, place أَ or هَلْ at the beginning of the nominal sentence. The grammatical arrangement inside the sentence does not change. Statement Question Meaning زَيْدٌ صَالِحٌ أَزَيْدٌ صَالِحٌ؟ Is Zayd righteous? زَيْدٌ صَالِحٌ هَلْ زَيْدٌ صَالِحٌ؟ Is Zayd righteous? الرَّجُلُ صَالِحٌ هَلِ الرَّجُلُ صَالِحٌ؟ Is the man righteous?

4. Apply the Yes/No Pattern

These examples apply the same rule without changing the nominal sentence internally. Meaning Arabic question or answer Are the two girls truthful? هَلِ الْبِنْتَانِ صَادِقَتَانِ؟ Are the female teachers seated? هَلِ الْمُعَلِّمَاتُ جَالِسَاتٌ؟ Is Hamid the son of Zayd? هَلْ حَامِدٌ ابْنُ زَيْدٍ؟ Yes, he is righteous. نَعَمْ، هُوَ صَالِحٌ.

5. Asking About a Thing or a Person

Interrogative It asks about Examples مَا a thing: what? مَا هَذَا؟ — What is this? مَا اسْمُكَ؟ — What is your name? مَنْ a person: who? مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ — Who are you? مَنْ رَبُّكَ؟ — Who is your Lord?

6. Asking About Condition or Place

Interrogative It asks about Examples كَيْفَ condition or manner: how? كَيْفَ أَنْتَ؟ — How are you? كَيْفَ حَالُكَ؟ — How is your condition? أَيْنَ place: where? أَيْنَ أَخُوكَ؟ — Where is your brother? أَيْنَ الْمَقَرُّ؟ — Where is the place of settlement?

7. Asking About Time or Origin

Interrogative Meaning Examples مَتَى / أَيَّانَ when? مَتَى نَصْرُ اللَّهِ؟ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ؟ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ؟ أَنَّى where from / how? أَنَّى لَكَ هَذَا؟ أَنَّى لَهُمُ الذِّكْرَى؟

8. Choosing with أَيٌّ

أَيٌّ asks which one. It is used as a muḍāf, so a following noun or attached pronoun completes the iḍāfah. Form Meaning أَيُّ شَيْءٍ؟ Which thing? أَيُّ الْفَرِيقَيْنِ؟ Which of the two groups? أَيُّكُمْ؟ Which of you?

9. Two Uses of كَمْ

Use What follows Examples Interrogative كَمْ a singular indefinite noun in the accusative كَمْ كِتَابًا عِنْدَكَ؟ كَمْ سَنَةً عُمْرُكَ؟ Reportive كَمْ a genitive noun, often after مِنْ وَكَمْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ فِي الْأَوَّلِينَ كَمْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُمْ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ

10. When a Preposition Meets مَا

When these prepositions are placed before interrogative مَا, the written form contracts slightly. Parts Combined form Meaning Example لِ + مَا لِمَ why / for what لِمَ أَنْتَ جَالِسٌ فِي الْبَيْتِ؟ لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ؟ فِي + مَا فِيمَ in what / about what فِيمَ أَنْتَ مَشْغُولٌ؟ مِنْ + مَا مِمَّ from what فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْإِنْسَانُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ عَنْ + مَا عَمَّ about what عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ

11. Other Prepositional Question Forms

Form Meaning Example لِمَنْ for whom / whose لِمَنْ هَذَا الْكِتَابُ؟ لِمَنِ الْمُلْكُ الْيَوْمَ؟ مِنْ أَيْنَ from where مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟ إِلَى أَيْنَ to where إِلَى أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ؟ إِلَى مَتَى until when إِلَى مَتَى تَنْتَظِرُ؟ بِكَمْ for how much بِكَمْ هَذَا الْكِتَابُ؟

12. Choose the Question Form by Meaning

● Use أَ or هَلْ when the answer can be yes or no. ● Use an interrogative noun when the answer must provide information. ● Match the interrogative to the target: مَا thing, مَنْ person, كَيْفَ condition, أَيْنَ place, مَتَى / أَيَّانَ time, أَيٌّ choice, كَمْ quantity. ● Notice the contracted forms with مَا: لِمَ، فِيمَ، مِمَّ، عَمَّ.
