1. What Will We Learn in This Level?

● Our journey of learning Arabic begins here! ● In this section, we will learn to recognize the basic sounds of Arabic. ● We will see that Urdu uses many Arabic words, so several words may already feel familiar. ● We will learn what a meaningful word is and how to recognize one.

● Urdu uses many Arabic words, so Urdu speakers may already find several Arabic words familiar. ● This familiarity can help us recognize some words, but we still need to learn their correct meanings, pronunciation, and grammar rules. ● We will build on this familiarity and learn Arabic sounds, meanings, and rules step by step.

3. Basic Vowel Marks (Harakat)

● Arabic uses three basic marks to help us read and pronounce letters: ○ fatḥah (َ), called zabar in Urdu: a letter with fatḥah is called maftūḥ. ○ kasrah (ِ), called zer in Urdu: a letter with kasrah is called maksūr. ○ ḍammah (ُ), called pesh in Urdu: a letter with ḍammah is called maḍmūm.

4. Tanwin and Jazm

● Double vowel marks (tanwīn): ○ Two fatḥahs (ً), two kasrahs (ٍ), and two ḍammahs (ٌ) are called tanwīn. ○ When continuing or joining the reading, they produce an 'n' sound at the end; the pronunciation may change when stopping. ● Jazm or sukūn (ْ): ○ This is a small mark placed above a letter. ○ A letter with this mark is joined to the letter before it. It is called sākin, meaning a letter with sukūn is read together with the preceding letter.

5. What Is a Kalimah?

● Definition of a kalimah: ○ Any word spoken by a person that has a clear meaning is called a kalimah in Arabic. ● Examples: ○ قَلَمٌ (pen) — this is a meaningful kalimah. ○ إِنْسَانٌ (human being) — this is also a meaningful kalimah. ○ كِتَابٌ (book) — this is another example of a kalimah.
