Lesson

1. What Will We Learn?

● Understand what an Arabic verb (fiʿl) expresses. ● Distinguish past, present, and future time. ● Understand root material, pattern, and the three root positions. ● Understand verb forms (ṣīghahs) and conjugation (taṣrīf). ● Recognize the three pronoun groups: third person, second person, and first person.

2. What Is a Verb?

A verb is a word that expresses the performance or occurrence of an action in a particular time. Time What it indicates past an action understood as having occurred present an action understood as occurring now future an action understood as occurring later

3. The Main Tense Forms Used in Arabic

Arabic uses two main verb structures for these three times: Arabic term Time covered fiʿl māḍī past fiʿl muḍāriʿ present and future Present and future are distinct meanings, but both are expressed through the muḍāriʿ structure, with context or another marker clarifying the intended time.

4. Root Material and Pattern

A verb form can be understood through two ideas: Idea Meaning root material the original letters carrying the core meaning pattern the organized form into which those letters are placed The meaning of the resulting word includes both the root meaning and the meaning carried by the pattern. This root-and-pattern system makes related verb forms easier to recognize and remember.

5. Three-Letter Roots

A very large majority of Arabic verbs—introduced here as about 99%—have root material made of 3 letters. Such a root is called thulāthī. For example, the letters ك ت ب carry the central idea of writing. Different organized forms can be built from the same root material.

6. The Pattern ف ع ل

To describe a three-letter root without repeating every root, its letters are placed against the model ف ع ل. Pattern position Root position Example with ك ت ب fāʾ al-kalimah first root letter ك ʿayn al-kalimah second root letter ت lām al-kalimah third root letter ب

7. What Is a Verb Form (Ṣīghah)?

A word-form that gives the meaning of a verb for a particular time and pronoun is called a ṣīghah. The organized arrangement of the verb forms according to their pronouns is called verb conjugation. Each form identifies its time and relevant pronoun.

8. Three Pronoun Groups

Verb forms are organized around three pronoun groups: Arabic term Person Who is meant? ghāʾib third person the person or people being spoken about ḥāḍir second person the person or people being addressed mutakallim first person the speaker or speakers

9. How the Pronoun Appears

Urdu and English commonly use a separate pronoun with a verb, such as “I went” or “we went.” Urdu may also show masculine/feminine differences in the verb phrase. In Arabic conjugation, the verb form itself is built to indicate its relevant pronoun; a separate pronoun is therefore not normally required with every form.

10. A Map for Reading Verb Forms

● A verb expresses an action in time. ● Arabic uses māḍī for past and muḍāriʿ for present/future. ● The root material carries the core meaning; the pattern organizes its letters. ● In ف ع ل, the three positions are fāʾ, ʿayn, and lām al-kalimah. ● A ṣīghah combines time with a pronoun meaning; arranging these forms is taṣrīf. ● The pronoun groups are ghāʾib, ḥāḍir, and mutakallim.
