Lesson
1. A Noun with a Final Ya
The previous level taught how final alif changes in mamdud and maqsur nouns. This level introduces a different ending: a noun whose final ya is preceded by kasrah. الْقَاضِي ends in ضِ + ي. الْهَادِي ends in دِ + ي. The final ya may remain or disappear when ال, case, dual or plural changes the form. We will identify the condition before applying the rule.
2. What Is Ism Manqus?
Ism manqus is a noun ending in ya with kasrah immediately before that ya. Examples: - الْبَاقِي - الْقَاضِي - الْهَادِي - الدَّاعِي Notice both conditions: it must be a noun, and its final ya must be preceded by kasrah.
3. A Similar Ending Is Not Enough
The definition begins with “a noun.” Therefore, a similar-looking ending alone does not make every word ism manqus. الْقَاضِي is a noun ending in ya after kasrah, so it is ism manqus. فِي also contains kasrah before final ya, but it is a preposition, not a noun. Therefore it is not ism manqus. Limitation: first establish that the word is a noun; then inspect its ending.
4. Without Al: Ya Drops in Nominative and Genitive
When ال is removed from an ism manqus, its final ya is omitted in the indefinite nominative and genitive forms, and tanwin kasr appears on the preceding letter. الْبَاقِي → بَاقٍ الْقَاضِي → قَاضٍ الْهَادِي → هَادٍ الدَّاعِي → دَاعٍ The written form has lost the ya, but the word remains an ism manqus by origin.
5. Important Exception: Accusative Keeps the Ya
Do not conclude that removing ال always deletes the final ya. The case state matters. - Indefinite nominative: هَادٍ — ya is omitted. - Indefinite accusative: هَادِيًا — ya remains and tanwin fath is written. - Indefinite genitive: هَادٍ — ya is omitted. Why the contrast? The deletion rule applies here to nominative and genitive; the accusative form visibly retains ya. This prevents the common over-generalization “no ال means no ya.”
6. Dual: The Ya Returns
When the dual is formed, the final ya appears before the dual ending. بَاقٍ → بَاقِيَانِ قَاضٍ → قَاضِيَانِ هَادٍ → هَادِيَانِ دَاعٍ → دَاعِيَانِ The ya omitted in the indefinite nominative or genitive form reappears before انِ in the dual.
7. Sound Masculine Plural: Delete Ya and Change the Vowel
In the sound masculine plural, final ya is deleted and the preceding kasrah changes to dammah before ونَ. بَاقِي → بَاقُونَ قَاضِي → قَاضُونَ هَادِي → هَادُونَ دَاعِي → دَاعُونَ Two operations are required: remove ya, then change the preceding vowel from kasrah to dammah. Merely attaching ونَ would miss the taught transformation.
8. Sound Feminine Plural: Ya Is Present
For the sound feminine plural, ya is present and اتٌ is added. بَاقِيَةٌ → بَاقِيَاتٌ قَاضِيَةٌ → قَاضِيَاتٌ هَادِيَةٌ → هَادِيَاتٌ دَاعِيَةٌ → دَاعِيَاتٌ Contrast this with the sound masculine plural: هَادُونَ has no ya, but هَادِيَاتٌ retains it. The plural type determines the operation.
9. With and Without Al Across the Three Cases
This table keeps definiteness, gender and case aligned. It also makes the accusative exception visible. FormNominativeAccusativeGenitivemasculine without alهَادٍهَادِيًاهَادٍfeminine without alهَادِيَةٌهَادِيَةًهَادِيَةٍmasculine with alالْهَادِيالْهَادِيَالْهَادِيfeminine with alالْهَادِيَةُالْهَادِيَةَالْهَادِيَةِ In the masculine form without ال, nominative and genitive omit ya, while accusative keeps it. With ال, the masculine ya remains visible.
10. A Reliable Decision Route
1. Confirm that the word is a noun, not merely a similar-looking word such as فِي. 2. Confirm final ya with kasrah immediately before it. 3. With ال, keep ya visible. 4. Without ال, omit ya in indefinite nominative and genitive, but keep it in accusative: هَادِيًا. 5. In the dual, ya appears before the dual ending. 6. In the sound masculine plural, delete ya and change kasrah to dammah. 7. In the sound feminine plural, keep ya and add اتٌ. Do not transform the ending before identifying the exact grammatical case.
