Lam al-Amr: Desired Actions

Read the bilingual lesson for Lam al-Amr: Desired Actions and test your understanding with a focused quiz.

Lesson

1. Lam al-Amr: A Desired Action

لِ can be attached to an imperfect verb to express that an action should be done. ● يَفْعَلُ — he does or will do. ● لِيَفْعَلْ — he should do; let him do. ● لِأَفْعَلْ — I should do. This lām is called لامِ امر. Its sense is gentler than translating every occurrence as an absolute “must.”

2. What Changes in the Imperfect Verb?

From earlier levels, recall that particles can change the ending of an imperfect verb. Lam al-Amr makes it akhaff/jussive. Ending groupResult with Lam al-AmrExampleFirst group: 5 slots ending on the root consonant, without inflectional nūnfinal sukunيَكْتُبُ ← لِيَكْتُبْSecond group: 7 slots ending in inflectional nūninflectional nūn is removedيَسْمَعُونَ ← لِيَسْمَعُواThird group: 2 feminine-plural slots ending in pronominal nūnform remains unchangedيَكْتُبْنَ ← لِيَكْتُبْنَ These are ending groups, not person categories such as third, second and first person.

3. Form Lam al-Amr Step by Step

Start with the imperfect verb, add لِ, and apply the jussive change at the end. يَكْتُبُ ← لِيَكْتُبْ The final بُ becomes بْ: he should write. أَدْرُسُ ← لِأَدْرُسْ The speaker says: I should study. نَدْرُسُ ← لِنَدْرُسْ The speakers say: we should study. The lām does not change who performs the action; the verb form still identifies the doer.

4. First Ending Group: Lam Kay or Lam al-Amr?

With a regular final consonant, the ending makes the contrast visible. لِيَفْعَلَ — so that he may do. This is لامِ کَی; the imperfect is in the nasb/takhfif state and ends with fatḥah. لِيَفْعَلْ — he should do. This is لامِ امر; the imperfect is jussive/akhaff and ends with sukun. Do not identify the lām alone. Read its meaning and the ending of the verb together.

5. Sometimes the Written Form Is Identical

In the second ending group (forms with inflectional nūn) and the third ending group (the two feminine-plural forms), Lam Kay and Lam al-Amr can produce the same written form. لِيَسْمَعُوا can mean: ● so that they may listen — لامِ کَی; or ● they should listen — لامِ امر. The word by itself is insufficient. The surrounding sentence and intended meaning must show which lām is present. This is why a quiz must give context rather than ask you to guess from an isolated form.

6. After Waw or Fa, the Lam Helps You

Another useful clue appears after وَ or فَ: Lam al-Amr becomes sakin, while Lam Kay retains its kasrah. وَلِيَسْمَعُوا — and so that they may listen: لامِ کَی. وَلْيَسْمَعُوا — and they should listen: لامِ امر. Compare: فَلْيَكْتُبْ زَيْدٌ — then let Zayd write. The lām after فَ is sakin.

7. Person and Voice: Use the Rule Carefully

Lam al-Amr is especially useful in these areas: ● Passive voice: third, second and first person. ● Active voice: especially third and first person. لِيُكْرَمْ ضَيْفُنَا — our guest should be honored: passive. لِنَدْرُسْ — we should study: active, first person. This is a teaching distribution, not an absolute ban on every active second-person occurrence. فَلْتَعْبُدُوا is an active second-person example.

8. Read Two Quran Examples

وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ Let every soul look at what it has sent ahead for tomorrow. The lām after وَ is sakin, and تَنْظُرْ is jussive. فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْإِنْسَانُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ Let the human being look at what he was created from. The underlying form is يَنْظُرْ. In connected reading, a temporary kasrah is heard before الْإِنْسَانُ. The verb remains jussive.

9. Two More Quran Examples

فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ So let them worship the Lord of this House. The inflectional nūn of يَعْبُدُونَ is removed in the jussive form يَعْبُدُوا. وَلْيَكْتُبْ بَيْنَكُمْ كَاتِبٌ بِالْعَدْلِ Let a writer write between you with justice. The final consonant of يَكْتُبْ bears sukun. Both examples express the desired action through Lam al-Amr.

10. Guided Translation Practice

A single sentence may contain two different lams. Read the meaning of each clause before deciding. ● You should worship your Lord so that He may forgive your sins. فَلْتَعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمْ لِيَغْفِرَ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ First lām: Lam al-Amr. Second lām: Lam Kay. ● They should help the Muslims. لِيَنْصُرُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ Context supplies the “should” meaning. ● We should help Allah so that He may help us. لِنَنْصُرِ اللَّهَ لِيَنْصُرَنَا The first underlying jussive form ends in sukun; connected reading gives a temporary kasrah before اللَّهَ.

11. A Reliable Decision Path

When you see lām before an imperfect verb, decide in this order: 1. Read the whole sentence: does it mean “so that” or “should/let”? 2. In the first ending group, inspect the ending: fatḥah points to Lam Kay; sukun points to Lam al-Amr. 3. In the second and third groups, rely on context when the surface form is identical. 4. After waw or fa, a sakin lām is a clear sign of Lam al-Amr in this contrast. 5. Remember that a temporary connecting vowel does not cancel the underlying jussive form. Final practice: لِيَقْرَأْهُ كُلُّ طَالِبٍ وَلْيَكْتُبْهُ — every student should read it and write it.
