Lesson
1. From Mansubat to the Five Maf'ul Categories
This section introduces مَفَاعِيلُ خَمْسَةٌ — five maf'ul categories. The direct object you already met in verbal sentences is the first category, called مَفْعُولٌ بِهِ. This level studies only this first category.
2. What Is Maf'ul Bihi?
مَفْعُولٌ بِهِ is the person or thing upon whom or which the action falls. In أَكَلَ إِبْرَاهِيْمُ التُّفَّاحَ — Ibrahim ate the apple: - the action is eating; - إِبْرَاهِيْمُ performed it, so he is the fa'il; - the eating affected التُّفَّاحَ, so it is the maf'ul bihi. Ask: “Whom or what did the action affect?” The answer often leads you to the maf'ul bihi.
3. Do Not Reverse the Doer and the Receiver
Meaning and case together distinguish the fa'il from the maf'ul bihi. ضَرَبَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا — Hamid struck Mahmud. - حَامِدٌ performed the action: fa'il and marfu. - مَحْمُودًا received the action: maf'ul bihi and mansub. The final fathah on مَحْمُودًا supports the analysis, but first understand who acted and who received the action.
4. When the Fa'il Is Understood from the Verb
A sentence can have a maf'ul bihi even when no separate noun appears as the fa'il. نَصَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ — he helped the Muslims. - the past verb نَصَرَ carries an understood “he” as its fa'il; - الْمُسْلِمِينَ are those who received the help, so the word is the maf'ul bihi; - because it is a sound masculine plural, ya is its sign of nasb. Do not call the nearest noun the fa'il automatically.
5. A Fixed Form Can Still Be the Object
The grammatical role comes from the sentence, even when the word does not display a changing case ending. Consider وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ — “Allah promised those who ...” - اللَّهُ is the explicit fa'il. - الَّذِينَ receives the action of promising, so it is the maf'ul bihi. - الَّذِينَ is mabni; therefore we describe it as being in the position of nasb rather than looking for a new visible ending. The displayed excerpt stops at الَّذِينَ; the ellipsis shows that its relative clause is not quoted here.
6. Nasb Can Appear in Different Ways
Every maf'ul bihi here is mansub, but its sign depends on the form of the noun. Object formExampleSign or statussingular or broken pluralالتُّفَّاحَ، مَحْمُودًا، الْكُتُبَfathahsound masculine pluralالْمُسْلِمِينَyasound feminine pluralالسَّمَاوَاتِkasrahmabni relative pronounالَّذِينَin the position of nasb First identify the role; then name the sign that suits the noun.
7. Two More Object Forms
Plural objects help us see why “mansub” does not always mean a visible fathah. كَتَبَ الْكُتُبَ — he wrote the books. - the understood “he” is the fa'il; - الْكُتُبَ is a broken-plural maf'ul bihi, mansub with fathah. خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ — Allah created the heavens. - اللَّهُ is the fa'il; - السَّمَاوَاتِ is a sound-feminine-plural maf'ul bihi, mansub with kasrah.
8. Apply the Rule to Simple New Examples
Find the action, its doer, and then the person or thing affected. قَرَأَ الطَّالِبُ الدَّرْسَ — the student read the lesson. - doer: الطَّالِبُ; object: الدَّرْسَ. فَتَحَ الطِّفْلُ الْبَابَ — the child opened the door. - doer: الطِّفْلُ; object: الْبَابَ. شَكَرَ الْمُعَلِّمُ الطَّالِبَ — the teacher thanked the student. - doer: الْمُعَلِّمُ; object: الطَّالِبَ.
9. Three Common Mistakes
Avoid deciding the object from position or one visible ending alone. 1. Do not reverse fa'il and maf'ul bihi: in ضَرَبَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا, Hamid acted and Mahmud received the action. 2. Do not demand a separate fa'il noun: نَصَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ has an understood fa'il. 3. Do not demand fathah on every object: الْمُسْلِمِينَ uses ya and السَّمَاوَاتِ uses kasrah. Meaning establishes the relationship; the appropriate case sign confirms it.
10. A Reliable Recognition Method
Use four steps to recognize a maf'ul bihi. 1. Find the verb: what action occurred? 2. Find the fa'il: who performed it, explicitly or through the verb? 3. Ask whom or what the action affected. 4. Confirm that noun's nasb with the sign appropriate to its form. In أَكَلَ إِبْرَاهِيْمُ التُّفَّاحَ, the action is eating, Ibrahim is the doer, and the apple is what was eaten. Therefore التُّفَّاحَ is the maf'ul bihi.
