Read the bilingual lesson for Maf'ul Fih: Adverbs of Place and test your understanding with a focused quiz.

Lesson

1. From When to Where

The previous level used an adverb of time to answer when? or for how long? This level keeps the same main idea but changes the question: - صَبَاحًا tells when the action happened: ظَرْفُ زَمَانٍ. - أَمَامَ الْمُعَلِّمِ tells where the action happened: ظَرْفُ مَكَانٍ. Both belong to مَفْعُولٌ فِيهِ; the meaning decides the branch.

2. What Is an Adverb of Place?

ظَرْفُ مَكَانٍ is a noun that identifies the place or position connected with an action. Ask where? جَلَسَ الطَّالِبُ أَمَامَ الْمُعَلِّمِ The student sat in front of the teacher. - Action: جَلَسَ — sat. - Where did he sit? أَمَامَ الْمُعَلِّمِ. - Therefore أَمَامَ functions as the adverb of place.

3. The Idafah Bridge

These place words are used as مُضَافٌ: another noun completes their meaning. فَوْقَ الْبَيْتِ — above the house - فَوْقَ is the adverb of place and the mudaf. It has no tanwin. - الْبَيْتِ is the mudaf ilayh and is majrur. Do not read فَوْقَ alone and leave the listener asking: above what? The following noun completes the relation.

4. Common Place Relations

Read each word as a relation that needs context. In an idafah phrase, the ending appears according to the sentence, as in فَوْقَ الْبَيْتِ.

5. Near, Before and After

Some words share a broad introductory meaning, but context completes the relation. Near or at عِنْدٌ, لَدُنْ and لَدَى share the basic sense of nearness here. Read the following noun and the whole sentence to understand the relation. Before or after قَبْلٌ and بَعْدٌ identify a relation before or after something. Context tells whether that relation concerns place, order or time.

6. Context Decides the Branch

أَتَى زَيْدٌ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ Zayd came after sunset. - بَعْدَ is mudaf; الْمَغْرِبِ is mudaf ilayh. - Here the phrase answers when did Zayd come? - Therefore بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ is an adverbial expression of time in this sentence. A familiar adverb does not receive its role from its dictionary meaning alone. The sentence meaning remains decisive.

7. Above Every Possessor of Knowledge

وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِي عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌ And above every possessor of knowledge is one who knows more. Quran example — Surah Yusuf 12:76 - فَوْقَ identifies the relation of being above, so it is the adverb of place. - It is mudaf and therefore has no tanwin. - كُلِّ ذِي عِلْمٍ completes the relation: above whom? The target here is the clear idafah فَوْقَ كُلِّ.

8. Four Clear Place Examples

جَلَسَ الطَّالِبُ أَمَامَ الْمُعَلِّمِ — The student sat in front of the teacher. وَقَفَ زَيْدٌ بَيْنَ الطُّلَّابِ — Zayd stood among the students. مَشَى الْوَلَدُ خَلْفَ أَبِيهِ — The boy walked behind his father. جَلَسْتُ عِنْدَ الْبَابِ — I sat by the door. In each sentence: - the highlighted relation answers where?; - the first word is the adverb of place and mudaf; - the following noun completes the relation as mudaf ilayh.

9. Three Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: deciding from one word alone بَعْدَ may refer to time in one sentence and another relation in another. Read the whole phrase. Mistake 2: leaving tanwin on the mudaf Use فَوْقَ الْبَيْتِ, not فَوْقًا الْبَيْتِ, when the house completes the relation. Mistake 3: ignoring the second noun In أَمَامَ الْمُعَلِّمِ, the teacher is not the adverb. أَمَامَ is the adverb; الْمُعَلِّمِ is mudaf ilayh.

10. A Four-Step Place Check

Use meaning and construction together. 1. Find the action. 2. Ask where did it happen? 3. Identify the word that gives the spatial relation. 4. Check the idafah: the adverb is mudaf and the following noun is mudaf ilayh. New application: وَقَفَ الْحَارِسُ قُدَّامَ الْبَابِ The guard stood in front of the door. قُدَّامَ answers where, and الْبَابِ completes its meaning.
