Lesson

1. From the Reason to the Time or Place

مَفْعُولٌ لَهُ explains why an action happened. مَفْعُولٌ فِيهِ tells when or where it happened. Compare: - سَافَرْتُ طَلَبًا لِلْعِلْمِ — طَلَبًا لِلْعِلْمِ gives the reason for travelling. - سَافَرْتُ يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ — يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ gives the time of travelling. The question changes from why? to when or where?

2. What Is Maf'ul Fih?

مَفْعُولٌ فِيهِ, also called a ظَرْفٌ, is a mansub noun that indicates the time or place of an action. - If it tells when, it is ظَرْفُ زَمَانٍ — an adverb of time. - If it tells where, it is ظَرْفُ مَكَانٍ — an adverb of place. This level develops adverbs of time. Place is introduced only so the two branches are not confused.

3. Ask When or Where

Use meaning first; do not classify a word merely because it is mansub. 1. Find the verb and its action. 2. Ask: when did it happen, or where did it happen? 3. Identify the noun that supplies that time or place. 4. Decide whether it is an adverb of time or an adverb of place. Maf'ul bihi, maf'ul mutlaq and maf'ul lahu can also be mansub, so the final vowel alone does not establish the role.

4. Two Adverbs of Time

سَافَرْتُ يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ — I travelled on Saturday. - The action is travelling. - يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ answers when it happened. - It is an adverb of time. صُمْتُ شَهْرًا — I fasted for a month. - شَهْرًا gives the duration of fasting. - It is also an adverb of time. A time expression may identify a particular time or a duration.

5. Place Uses the Same Main Idea

ذَهَبْتُ خَلْفَ زَيْدٍ — I went behind Zayd. خَلْفَ زَيْدٍ identifies where the speaker went, so it is an adverb of place. وَقَفْتُ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ — I stood beneath the tree. تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ identifies where the speaker stood, so it is an adverb of place. These examples establish the contrast. The detailed place-word inventory is not needed to understand the time rule in this level.

6. One Sentence, Both Time and Place

قَرَأْتُ الدَّرْسَ صَبَاحًا أَمَامَ الْمُعَلِّمِ I read the lesson in the morning in front of the teacher. - الدَّرْسَ is the maf'ul bihi: what was read. - صَبَاحًا answers when: adverb of time. - أَمَامَ الْمُعَلِّمِ answers where: adverb of place. A sentence can therefore contain an object, a time expression and a place expression together.

7. Time Words: Short Units and Long Periods

These common nouns can function as adverbs of time when the sentence uses them to locate or measure an action. In use, the construction determines whether the noun appears with tanwin or in an idafah phrase.

9. Mansub, Idafah and Tanwin

When no preposition governs an adverb of time, it is mansub. Two common appearances: - يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ — يَوْمَ is mudaf, so it has no tanwin; السَّبْتِ is mudaf ilayh. - شَهْرًا and صَبَاحًا — each stands without an idafah complement, so it appears mansub with tanwin. The absence of tanwin in يَوْمَ comes from idafah; it remains mansub as the adverb of time.

10. Early Morning and Late Afternoon

اُذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا Remember Allah in the early morning and late afternoon. - بُكْرَةً identifies one time of the commanded action. - أَصِيلًا identifies another time. - Neither is followed by an idafah complement here, so both appear mansub with tanwin. Both بُكْرَةً and أَصِيلًا identify the time of the same command, so both are adverbs of time.

11. A Four-Step Time Check

Identify an adverb of time through meaning and construction. 1. Find the action. 2. Ask when it happened or how long it lasted. 3. Identify the noun giving that time or duration. 4. Check its construction: is it in idafah, or does it stand with tanwin? New examples: - دَرَسْتُ لَيْلًا — I studied at night. - سَافَرْنَا صَبَاحًا — we travelled in the morning. - زُرْتُهُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ — I visited him on Friday.
