1. From Describing an Action to Explaining Its Reason

مَفْعُولٌ مُطْلَقٌ explains the action itself; مَفْعُولٌ لَهُ explains why the action happened. Compare: - ضَرَبْتُهُ ضَرْبًا — ضَرْبًا emphasizes the striking. - ضَرَبْتُهُ تَأْدِيبًا — تَأْدِيبًا gives the reason: to teach discipline. Both words are mansub verbal nouns, but their meanings give them different grammatical roles.

2. What Is Maf'ul Lahu?

مَفْعُولٌ لَهُ is a mansub noun that states the cause or reason for an action. It is also called مَفْعُولٌ لِأَجْلِهِ. The word used for this reason is a verbal noun. It names an idea such as discipline, gratitude, fear or caution. A useful question is: Why did the action happen? The verbal noun that answers this question may be the maf'ul lahu.

3. A Simple Recognition Method

Recognize the maf'ul lahu through meaning, not through the final fathah alone. 1. Find the verb and the action. 2. Ask why that action occurred. 3. Look for a verbal noun that supplies the reason. 4. Confirm that this reason-word is mansub. A mansub ending by itself is not enough: maf'ul bihi and maf'ul mutlaq can also be mansub.

4. Discipline as the Reason

ضَرَبْتُهُ تَأْدِيبًا I struck him to teach him discipline. - ضَرَبْتُ states the action. - هُ is the maf'ul bihi: the person struck. - تَأْدِيبًا is the mansub verbal noun that answers why the action occurred. Therefore تَأْدِيبًا is the maf'ul lahu, not another receiver of the action.

5. Gratitude as the Reason

اُعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ شُكْرًا Worship Allah out of gratitude. - the commanded action is اُعْبُدُوا; - اللَّهَ is the maf'ul bihi of worship; - شُكْرًا gives the reason for worship: gratitude. Because it is a mansub verbal noun expressing the reason, شُكْرًا is maf'ul lahu.

6. Fear as the Reason

وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلَاقٍ (Quran 17:31) Do not kill your children for fear of poverty. - لَا تَقْتُلُوا prohibits the action. - أَوْلَادَكُمْ is the maf'ul bihi. - خَشْيَةَ إِمْلَاقٍ explains the motive mentioned for that action: fear of poverty. The key question remains: Why? — because of fear of poverty.

7. Caution as the Reason

يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْ مِنَ الصَّوَاعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ (Quran 2:19) They put their fingers in their ears because of the thunderclaps, fearing death. The action is putting fingers in the ears. حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ states why they do it: caution against death. Thus حَذَرَ is the mansub verbal noun functioning as maf'ul lahu.

8. Recompense and Deterrence

وَالسَّارِقُ وَالسَّارِقَةُ فَاقْطَعُوا أَيْدِيَهُمَا جَزَاءً بِمَا كَسَبَا نَكَالًا مِنَ اللَّهِ (Quran 5:38) The expressions جَزَاءً بِمَا كَسَبَا and نَكَالًا مِنَ اللَّهِ state the recompense and deterrent purpose mentioned for the command. These mansub verbal nouns explain purpose rather than naming the thing affected by the action.

9. Apply the Rule to Simple New Examples

In each sentence, the highlighted verbal noun answers why the action occurred. جِئْتُ طَلَبًا لِلْعِلْمِ — I came seeking knowledge. طَلَبًا gives the reason for coming. وَقَفَ الطَّالِبُ احْتِرَامًا لِلْمُعَلِّمِ — the student stood out of respect for the teacher. احْتِرَامًا gives the reason for standing. سَاعَدْتُ الْفَقِيرَ رَحْمَةً بِهِ — I helped the poor man out of compassion for him. رَحْمَةً gives the reason for helping.
