Lesson

1. From the Receiver to the Action Itself

مَفْعُولٌ بِهِ names the receiver of an action; مَفْعُولٌ مُطْلَقٌ describes the action itself. Compare: - ضَرَبْتُهُ — I struck him: the attached هُ receives the action. - ضَرَبْتُهُ ضَرْبًا — I certainly struck him: ضَرْبًا repeats the idea of striking to emphasize it. Both can be mansub, but they answer different questions. Do not confuse the receiver with the verbal noun that explains the action.

2. What Is Maf'ul Mutlaq?

مَفْعُولٌ مُطْلَقٌ is a mansub verbal noun used to emphasize an action, describe its kind or quality, or state its number. A verbal noun names the action without tying it to a person or time. For example, ضَرْبٌ means striking. In a sentence it appears as ضَرْبًا because the maf'ul mutlaq is mansub. Recognition questions: 1. Is the word a verbal noun connected to the verb's action? 2. Does it emphasize, describe, or count that action?

3. The Three Purposes

The purpose is understood from the complete expression, not from the ending alone. PurposeWhat it tells usExampleemphasisconfirms that the action truly occurredضَرَبْتُهُ ضَرْبًاkind or qualityshows how the action occurredضَرَبَ السَّارِقَ ضَرْبًا شَدِيدًاnumbershows how many times it occurredقَرَأْتُ الرِّسَالَةَ قِرَاءَةً وَاحِدَةً The maf'ul mutlaq is mansub in all three uses.

4. Emphasis: Confirming the Action

When the verbal noun simply reinforces its verb, it is used for emphasis. ضَرَبْتُهُ ضَرْبًا I certainly struck him. - ضَرَبْتُ states the action. - هُ is the maf'ul bihi: the person struck. - ضَرْبًا is the mansub maf'ul mutlaq: it confirms the striking. No adjective or number limits ضَرْبًا here, so its job is emphasis.

5. Kind or Quality: How the Action Happened

A description attached to the verbal noun can show the kind or quality of the action. ضَرَبَ السَّارِقَ ضَرْبًا شَدِيدًا — he struck the thief severely. - السَّارِقَ: maf'ul bihi, the person struck. - ضَرْبًا: maf'ul mutlaq. - شَدِيدًا: describes the striking as severe. جَلَسَ جِلْسَةَ الْمُعَلِّمِ — he sat in the manner of the teacher. The expression جِلْسَةَ الْمُعَلِّمِ specifies the kind of sitting.

6. Number: How Many Times?

A single-occurrence form or an explicit number can state how many times the action happened. قَرَأْتُ الرِّسَالَةَ قِرَاءَةً وَاحِدَةً I read the letter once. قِرَاءَةً وَاحِدَةً counts one reading. فَنَظَرَ نَظْرَةً فِي النُّجُومِ Then he cast one look at the stars. The singular occurrence noun نَظْرَةً shows one look. The learner should identify the count from the meaning of the full phrase.

7. A Synonymous Verbal Noun for Emphasis

When the maf'ul mutlaq is used only for emphasis, a synonymous verbal noun may also reinforce the action. جَلَسْتُ قُعُودًا — I certainly sat down. - the verb is جَلَسْتُ; - قُعُودًا is a synonymous verbal noun meaning sitting; - it is mansub and emphasizes the action. Do not turn this into a rule for every use. When kind or number must be stated, the chosen expression must actually convey that information.

8. Two Mansub Elements, Two Different Roles

One sentence may contain both a maf'ul bihi and a maf'ul mutlaq. ضَرَبَ السَّارِقَ ضَرْبًا شَدِيدًا - Whom did he strike? السَّارِقَ — maf'ul bihi. - What kind of striking? ضَرْبًا شَدِيدًا — maf'ul mutlaq with its description. Both are mansub, so the final fathah alone cannot tell their roles. Meaning and the question each expression answers distinguish them.

9. Apply the Three Purposes to New Examples

Use the words around the verbal noun to identify its purpose. شَكَرْتُهُ شُكْرًا — I certainly thanked him. شُكْرًا emphasizes the thanking. مَشَى الطِّفْلُ مَشْيًا سَرِيعًا — the child walked quickly. سَرِيعًا makes مَشْيًا describe the quality of walking. طَرَقْتُ الْبَابَ طَرْقَةً وَاحِدَةً — I knocked on the door once. وَاحِدَةً makes the phrase state the number.

10. A Four-Step Recognition Method

Recognize a maf'ul mutlaq by form, connection and purpose. 1. Find the verb and its action. 2. Look for a mansub verbal noun connected to that action. 3. Decide whether it emphasizes, describes or counts the action. 4. Keep it separate from the person or thing receiving the action. In قَرَأْتُ الرِّسَالَةَ قِرَاءَةً وَاحِدَةً, الرِّسَالَةَ is what was read, while قِرَاءَةً وَاحِدَةً counts the reading.
