Lesson
1. Mudari Akhaff and Lam
This level teaches how an imperfect changes into the form called Mudari Akhaff, and how لَمْ gives emphatic past negation. ● Recognize the three ending groups. ● Apply the correct ending change. ● Read لَمْ + imperfect as an emphatic negative statement about the past. ● Explain why a final sukun appears, why an added nun disappears, or why no visible change occurs.
2. What Mudari Akhaff Means Here
Mudari Akhaff is the form an imperfect takes after one of the taught particles makes its ending lighter. The change is not identical in every form. First identify the ending group; then apply its rule. This level begins with لَمْ. The familiar term jazm describes this grammatical state; its visible forms are taught here under the title Mudari Akhaff.
3. The Three Ending Groups
The ending already present in the imperfect determines what will happen. Group Original ending Change in Mudari Akhaff Example First final dammah replace dammah with sukun يَفْعَلُ ← يَفْعَلْ Second added final nun remove the added nun يَفْعَلُونَ ← يَفْعَلُوا Third final nun of feminine plural no visible change يَفْعَلْنَ ← يَفْعَلْنَ This is a genuine three-way comparison: sukun, removal of added nun, or no visible change.
4. First Group: Dammah Becomes Sukun
In the first group, replace the final dammah with sukun. Five pronoun slots are included; two share the written form تَفْعَلُ. هُوَ: يَفْعَلُ ← يَفْعَلْ هِيَ: تَفْعَلُ ← تَفْعَلْ أَنْتَ: تَفْعَلُ ← تَفْعَلْ أَنَا: أَفْعَلُ ← أَفْعَلْ نَحْنُ: نَفْعَلُ ← نَفْعَلْ Worked example: هُوَ يَكْتُبُ ← لَمْ يَكْتُبْ. The ending changes from dammah to sukun; the meaning becomes “He did not write.”
5. Second Group: Remove the Added Nun
In the second group, remove the added final nūn; do not remove the preceding alif, wāw or yā. Seven pronoun slots are included; three share the written form تَفْعَلَانِ. In each one, the added nun has dropped.
6. Third Group: No Visible Change
The forms يَفْعَلْنَ and تَفْعَلْنَ already end in the nun of feminine plural, so their written form remains unchanged here. هُنَّ يَكْتُبْنَ ← لَمْ يَكْتُبْنَ They (f.) write/will write → They did not write. No visible change does not mean that لَمْ did nothing: the meaning has changed to past negation.
7. Lam Negates the Past
لَمْ has no separate lexical translation here. With an imperfect, it makes the statement emphatically negative and restricts its meaning to the past. يَفْعَلُ — he does / will do لَمْ يَفْعَلْ — he did not do at all Therefore, do not translate the second expression as “he does not do.” Read the combination as one emphatic past-negative meaning.
8. Read Form and Meaning Together
A correct analysis answers two questions: what changed at the end, and what happened to the meaning? ● لَمْ نَذْهَبْ إِلَى السُّوقِ — first group: final sukun; “We did not go to the market.” ● لَمْ يَفْتَحُوا الْبَابَ — second group: added nun removed; “They did not open the door.” ● لَمْ تَجْلِسِي هُنَا — second group: added nun removed; “You did not sit here.” All three express past negation, but their ending changes are not identical.
9. Interrogative Hamzah with Lam
The interrogative hamzah may come before لَمْ: أَ + لَمْ = أَلَمْ. أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ؟ — Did you not know? The hamzah makes the expression a question. لَمْ still gives past negation and the following imperfect remains Mudari Akhaff.
10. Examples Preserved from the Lesson
Use the same two-step reading: identify لَمْ, then inspect the following ending. ● لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ — both verbs end in sukun; the statement is negative in the past. ● أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ — interrogative hamzah precedes لَمْ; تَعْلَمْ ends in sukun. ● أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ — the first imperfect after لَمْ is the second-group form يَعْلَمُوا, whose inflectional nūn has been removed; the later يَقْبَلُ belongs to the clause after أَنَّ.
11. A Reliable Three-Step Method
When you meet لَمْ + imperfect, follow three steps. 1. Read the meaning as emphatic past negation. 2. Identify the imperfect's ending group. 3. Explain the visible result: sukun, removal of added nun, or no visible change. Common mistake: removing every final nun. Only the added nun of the second group is removed; the nun of feminine plural in the third group remains.
