Lesson

1. Mudari Takhfif and Lan

What will you learn? ● Recognize how the three imperfect groups change in Mudari Takhfif. ● Distinguish final fatḥah, removal of the inflectional nūn, and an unchanged feminine-plural ending. ● Recognize the six particles that produce this state. ● Understand the strong future negation expressed by لَنْ. ● Apply لَنْ to new first-, second- and third-group examples.

2. Start from the Three Groups

The previous level supplied the map; this level uses it. ● First group: the final root letter has dammah and there is no inflectional nūn. ● Second group: the ending contains the inflectional nūn. ● Third group: يَفْعَلْنَ and تَفْعَلْنَ carry the feminine-plural ending. Mudari Takhfif changes the ending according to the group. Identify the group before changing the verb.

3. Three Groups, Three Results

Mudari Takhfif is recognized through a change at the verb ending. Group ordinary imperfect Mudari Takhfif change First يَفْعَلُ يَفْعَلَ final-root dammah becomes fatḥah Second يَفْعَلُونَ يَفْعَلُوا inflectional nūn is removed Third يَفْعَلْنَ يَفْعَلْنَ no visible ending change The particle comes before the verb, but the visible change appears at the end of the verb.

4. First Group: Dammah Becomes Fathah

Only the final-root vowel changes. Ordinary imperfect Mudari Takhfif يَفْعَلُ يَفْعَلَ تَفْعَلُ تَفْعَلَ تَفْعَلُ تَفْعَلَ أَفْعَلُ أَفْعَلَ نَفْعَلُ نَفْعَلَ Example: يَكْتُبُ ← لَنْ يَكْتُبَ. The final بُ becomes بَ; the rest of the form remains intact.

5. Second Group: Remove the Inflectional Nun

Keep the dual/plural or feminine marker; remove only the final inflectional nūn. Ordinary imperfect Mudari Takhfif what was removed يَفْعَلَانِ يَفْعَلَا inflectional nūn تَفْعَلَانِ تَفْعَلَا inflectional nūn يَفْعَلُونَ يَفْعَلُوا inflectional nūn تَفْعَلُونَ تَفْعَلُوا inflectional nūn تَفْعَلِينَ تَفْعَلِي inflectional nūn For example, يَكْتُبُونَ becomes لَنْ يَكْتُبُوا. The wāw still marks masculine plural; the final nūn is gone.

6. Third Group: No Visible Change

Two forms are clearer in prose than in a table. ● يَفْعَلْنَ remains يَفْعَلْنَ. ● تَفْعَلْنَ remains تَفْعَلْنَ. Example: هُنَّ يَكْتُبْنَ ← هُنَّ لَنْ يَكْتُبْنَ. The feminine-plural nūn is part of this ending; it is not the removable inflectional nūn of the second group.

7. Six Particles of Mudari Takhfif

These six particles can place a following imperfect verb in Mudari Takhfif. ● لَنْ ● أَنْ ● كَيْ ● إِذَنْ ● حَتَّى ● لِـ This level explains لَنْ in full. At this point, simply recognize the other five as members of the same set.

8. What Lan Adds

لَنْ gives the imperfect a strong negative meaning tied to the future. Compare: ● يَفْعَلُ — He does, or he will do. ● لَنْ يَفْعَلَ — He will not do it at all. Two things happened together: the meaning became a strong future negation, and the first-group final dammah changed to fatḥah.

9. Apply Lan to All Three Groups

Identify the group, then make only that group’s change. ● First: يَجْلِسُ ← لَنْ يَجْلِسَ — final dammah becomes fatḥah. ● Second, dual: يَكْتُبَانِ ← لَنْ يَكْتُبَا — final nūn is removed. ● Second, plural: يَقْرَؤُونَ ← لَنْ يَقْرَؤُوا — final nūn is removed. ● Third: يَكْتُبْنَ ← لَنْ يَكْتُبْنَ — no visible ending change.

10. Lan in Quranic Examples

Read the ending after لَنْ. ● لَنْ يَخْلُقُوا ذُبَابًا — They will never create even a fly. The original plural ending would contain an inflectional nūn; here it is removed. (Al-Hajj 22:73) ● لَنْ يَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ — He will never enter Paradise. The first-group final dammah has become fatḥah. (Al-Baqarah 2:111) ● لَنْ تَنْفَعَكُمْ أَرْحَامُكُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُكُمْ — Your relatives and children will never benefit you. The verb is first group, so it ends in fatḥah. (Al-Mumtahanah 60:3)

11. Lan Is Not La

Both negate, but they do not produce the same form or time meaning. ● وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَا مُوْسَى لَنْ نَصْبِرَ عَلَى طَعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ — “We will not endure one kind of food”: لَنْ gives future negation and نَصْبِرُ ends in fatḥah. (Al-Baqarah 2:61) ● لَنْ يَنْفَعَكُمُ الْفِرَارُ — Flight will never benefit you: strong future negation; final fatḥah. ● وَإِذًا لَا تُمَتَّعُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا — Then you will be allowed to enjoy only a little: لَا does not remove the inflectional nūn here. (Al-Ahzab 33:16) Do not change a verb merely because you see any negative particle; first identify the particle itself.

12. A Reliable Four-Step Method

Use the same method every time. 1. Confirm that the particle is one of لَنْ، أَنْ، كَيْ، إِذَنْ، حَتَّى، لِـ. 2. Identify the imperfect form as first, second or third group. 3. Apply the correct ending rule: fatḥah, remove the inflectional nūn, or no visible change. 4. With لَنْ, translate the result as a strong negation in the future. Common error: removing the feminine-plural nūn in يَفْعَلْنَ. That nūn is not the second-group inflectional nūn.
