A past-tense sentence becomes negative when مَا is placed at its beginning. فَرِحَ زَيْدٌ — Zayd became happy. مَا فَرِحَ زَيْدٌ — Zayd did not become happy. The action and its time stay in the past; مَا only denies that the action happened.

3. Where Does مَا Go?

Use this order: مَا + past verb + subject + object or other complements ● Put مَا before the verb, not after it. ● Do not replace or reshape the past verb merely because the sentence is negative. ● Translate the whole sentence naturally with “did not.”

4. Read the Whole Sentence

مَا ضَرَبْتُ زَيْدًا — I did not hit Zayd. ● مَا gives negation. ● ضَرَبْتُ is the past verb; its ending also identifies the speaker as the subject. ● زَيْدًا remains the object. Negation changes the truth of the action, not the grammatical roles already present in the sentence.
