1. What Will We Learn in This Level?

● In this section, we will begin the second important aspect of a noun: number. ● We will learn the basic Arabic number system, which differs from Urdu. ● We will learn how to form the special noun for two things, the dual, from the singular. ● We will study the two basic steps for forming the dual and work through a solved exercise.

2. The Three Number Forms in Arabic

● Urdu and English have only two number forms: singular and plural. ● Arabic, however, has three noun forms according to number: ○ singular: indicates only one thing or person. ○ dual (muthannā): indicates exactly two things or persons. ○ plural: indicates three or more things or persons.

3. Rule for Forming the Dual

● Rule for forming the dual from a singular noun: ○ Remove the tanwīn or vowel mark from the final letter of the singular noun and give it fatḥah. ○ Add ـَانِ (alif followed by nūn with kasrah) at the end. ○ Example: رَجُلٌ (one man) → رَجُلَانِ (two men) ○ Example: كِتَابٌ (one book) → كِتَابَانِ (two books)

4. The Rule for الرَّحْمٰنُ and سُبْحَانَ

● An important point: ○ Not every word ending in 'ān' is dual. In some words, the nūn is part of the original word, as in الرَّحْمٰنُ and سُبْحَانَ.

7. Beautiful Examples of the Dual from a Noble Hadith

● The complete Hadith in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6406 says: ○ "كَلِمَتَانِ خَفِيفَتَانِ عَلَى اللِّسَانِ، ثَقِيلَتَانِ فِي الْمِيزَانِ، حَبِيبَتَانِ إِلَى الرَّحْمَنِ: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ." ● The four highlighted dual forms in this Hadith and their singular forms are: Dual Meaning Singular Meaning كَلِمَتَانِ two statements كَلِمَةٌ statement/kalimah حَبِيبَتَانِ two beloved statements حَبِيبَةٌ beloved (feminine) خَفِيفَتَانِ two light statements خَفِيفَةٌ light (feminine) ثَقِيلَتَانِ two heavy statements ثَقِيلَةٌ heavy (feminine)
