Read the bilingual lesson for Objects in Verbal Sentences and test your understanding with a focused quiz.

Lesson

1. What Will You Learn?

By the end of this level, you will be able to: ● identify the object (مفعول) in a verbal sentence. ● distinguish an intransitive verb from a transitive verb. ● keep the object accusative and recognize the object forms used here. ● translate sentences with 1 object and understand the introduction to 2 objects.

2. What Is the Object?

The noun on which the action falls is the object (مفعول). Example: ضَرَبَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا ● ضَرَبَ — the action: hit ● حَامِدٌ — the subject: the doer ● مَحْمُودًا — the object: the person who was hit The object is accusative (منصوب).

3. Intransitive and Transitive Verbs

An intransitive verb completes its basic meaning without an object. A transitive verb needs 1 or sometimes 2 objects to complete the intended meaning. Verb type What completes the meaning? Example Intransitive (لازم) verb + subject جَلَسَ الطَّالِبُ Transitive (متعدی) verb + subject + 1 object كَتَبَ الطَّالِبُ الدَّرْسَ Transitive to 2 objects verb + subject + 2 objects جَعَلَ اللَّهُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا

4. Three Roles in a Verbal Sentence

Verb → subject → object In شَرِبَ الْوَلَدُ الْمَاءَ: ● شَرِبَ is the verb. ● الْوَلَدُ is the nominative subject. ● الْمَاءَ is the accusative object. Ask 2 questions: Who performed the action? That is the subject. What received the action? That is the object.

5. Understand the Meaning, Then Make an Idiomatic Translation

Arabic commonly presents the roles as verb → subject → object, while idiomatic English normally says subject → verb → object. نَصَرَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا ● Verb: نَصَرَ — helped ● Subject: حَامِدٌ — Hamid ● Object: مَحْمُودًا — Mahmood, the person who was helped Idiomatic translation: Hamid helped Mahmood. Do not lose the grammatical roles when changing the word order in translation.

6. How the Accusative Object Appears

The object is accusative, but the visible sign is not always a fatḥah. These 4 forms already appear in this level's sentences. Object form Accusative sign seen here Example singular noun fatḥah الْأَرْضَ dual noun ياء الْوَلَدَيْنِ sound masculine plural ياء الْكَافِرِينَ sound feminine plural kasrah السَّمَاوَاتِ

7. Practice Set 1: Creation and Help

Read each sentence by identifying the action, doer, and object. Natural meaning Arabic sentence Allah created the earth خَلَقَ اللَّهُ الْأَرْضَ Allah created the heavens خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ Allah created the heavens and the earth خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ Hamid helped Mahmood نَصَرَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا Zayd hit two boys ضَرَبَ زَيْدٌ الْوَلَدَيْنِ

8. Practice Set 2: Reading, Hearing, and Action

Notice that the subject may be an attached pronoun or an explicit noun, but the object remains accusative. Natural meaning Arabic sentence I read the Quran قَرَأْتُ الْقُرْآنَ The Muslims killed the disbelievers قَتَلَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ الْكَافِرِينَ We heard the Quran سَمِعْنَا الْقُرْآنَ The Muslim tore the paper مَزَّقَ الْمُسْلِمُ الْوَرَقَةَ Zaynab memorized the lesson حَفِظَتْ زَيْنَبُ الدَّرْسَ

9. Practice Set 3: Different Subject and Object Forms

Compare dual subjects, proper names, and plural objects without changing their grammatical roles. Natural meaning Arabic sentence Two girls hit the boy ضَرَبَتِ الْبِنْتَانِ الْوَلَدَ Allah made a promise to the believers وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ Ibrahim helped Usama نَصَرَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ أُسَامَةَ Dawud killed Jalut قَتَلَ دَاوُدُ جَالُوتَ Two thieves stole the property سَرَقَ اللِّصَّانِ الْمَالَ

10. Some Transitive Verbs Take Two Objects

Some transitive verbs need 2 objects to complete the intended meaning. Both objects are accusative in these examples. Arabic sentence First object Second object جَعَلَ اللَّهُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً السَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً حَسِبَ حَامِدٌ مَحْمُودًا عَالِمًا مَحْمُودًا عَالِمًا Read the first example as: Allah made the earth a resting place.

11. A Simple 5-Step Method

1. Find the verb. What action occurred? 2. Find the subject. Who performed the action? 3. Ask whether the meaning is complete. If not, look for the object. 4. Keep the object accusative. Check whether the form shows fatḥah, ياء, or the sound-feminine-plural kasrah. 5. Check whether the verb needs 1 or 2 objects. Try it: فَتَحَ حَامِدٌ الْبَابَ — Hamid opened the door.
