Lesson

1. What Will We Learn?

● Understand what the past-tense verb (fiʿl māḍī) means. ● Read its complete set of 14 forms. ● Use endings to identify third person, second person, and first person. ● Distinguish singular, dual, plural, masculine, and feminine meanings. ● Apply the same endings to simple new roots such as ك ت ب.

2. What Does Fiʿl Māḍī Mean?

A past-tense verb expresses an action understood as having occurred in the past. The model form is فَعَلَ, meaning “he did.” This form is the starting point: the root supplies the action, while the ending tells us who performed it. كَتَبَ = he wrote دَخَلَ = he entered

3. One Root, Different Doers

Keep the action كَتَبَ “wrote” in mind. A small change at the end changes the doer: ● كَتَبَ — one man wrote ● كَتَبَا — two men wrote ● كَتَبُوا — a group of men wrote ● كَتَبَتْ — one woman wrote The central action remains “writing”; the ending changes the pronoun meaning.

4. Third-Person Forms: The People Spoken About

Form Number and gender Natural meaning فَعَلَ masculine singular he did فَعَلَا masculine dual the two men did فَعَلُوا masculine plural the men did فَعَلَتْ feminine singular she did فَعَلَتَا feminine dual the two women did فَعَلْنَ feminine plural the women did All 6 forms are third person because the speaker is talking about someone else.

5. Second-Person Forms: The People Addressed

Form Number and gender Natural meaning فَعَلْتَ masculine singular you (one man) did فَعَلْتُمَا masculine dual you two men did فَعَلْتُمْ masculine plural you men did فَعَلْتِ feminine singular you (one woman) did فَعَلْتُمَا feminine dual you two women did فَعَلْتُنَّ feminine plural you women did The same form فَعَلْتُمَا addresses two people whether they are masculine or feminine; context supplies the gender.

6. First-Person Forms: The Speaker

There are 2 first-person forms: One speaker: فَعَلْتُ means “I did.” A male or female speaker uses the same form. Example: كَتَبْتُ — I wrote. More than one speaker: فَعَلْنَا means “we did.” It also does not change for gender. Example: كَتَبْنَا — we wrote.

7. A Simple Map of All 14 Forms

Person group How many forms? Forms third person 6 فَعَلَ، فَعَلَا، فَعَلُوا، فَعَلَتْ، فَعَلَتَا، فَعَلْنَ second person 6 فَعَلْتَ، فَعَلْتُمَا، فَعَلْتُمْ، فَعَلْتِ، فَعَلْتُمَا، فَعَلْتُنَّ first person 2 فَعَلْتُ، فَعَلْنَا 6 + 6 + 2 = 14. First identify the person group; then read number and gender from the ending.

8. Endings That Give Quick Clues

Use these clues as a reading aid, not as isolated memorization: ● ـَا often marks masculine dual third person: كَتَبَا. ● ـُوا marks masculine plural third person: كَتَبُوا. ● ـَتْ marks feminine singular third person: كَتَبَتْ. ● ـْنَ marks feminine plural third person: كَتَبْنَ. ● Endings beginning with ت commonly mark addressed forms or ـْتُ for “I.” ● ـْنَا marks “we”: كَتَبْنَا.

9. Three Common Confusions

1. She wrote vs you (one woman) wrote كَتَبَتْ ends with a silent tāʾ; كَتَبْتِ has the addressed ending -ti. 2. They, the women, wrote vs we wrote كَتَبْنَ ends in -na for feminine plural third person; كَتَبْنَا has a final alif and means “we wrote.” 3. Two men addressed vs two women addressed Both use كَتَبْتُمَا; context tells us the gender.

10. Apply the Pattern to a New Root

The root د خ ل means entering. Keep its action and add the same past-tense endings: ● دَخَلَ — he entered ● دَخَلَتْ — she entered ● دَخَلْتُمْ — you men entered ● دَخَلْتُنَّ — you women entered ● دَخَلْنَا — we entered The root changes from ك ت ب to د خ ل, but the pronoun endings keep the same jobs.

11. Decode a Form Step by Step

خَرَجُوا 1. Core action: خ ر ج — going out. 2. Ending: ـُوا — masculine plural third person. 3. Meaning: the men went out. عَلِمْتِ 1. Core action: ع ل م — knowing. 2. Ending: ـْتِ — feminine singular second person. 3. Meaning: you (one woman) knew.

12. How to Read Any Past-Tense Form

● Find the root action. ● Read the ending to identify the pronoun meaning. ● Decide the person group: third, second, or first person. ● Then identify number and, where the form distinguishes it, gender. ● Check the three common contrasts: ـَتْ / ـْتِ, ـْنَ / ـْنَا, and the shared dual ـْتُمَا. ● Translate naturally; do not force the Arabic word order into Urdu or English.
