Lesson
1. Blessed Phrases from the Qur'an
● In this section, we will practise many iḍāfah constructions by applying the rules of the muḍāf and muḍāf ilayh. ● We will translate 26 blessed phrases frequently used in the Qur'an. ● We will complete construction exercises by joining two nouns to make an iḍāfah. ● We will learn the special spelling rule for a diptote muḍāf ilayh.
2. Arabic Translation Practice (Part One)
● Study the translations of the following blessed Qur'anic phrases carefully: ○ The House of Allah: -> بَيْتُ اللهِ (بَيْتُ is the muḍāf without al-, and اَللهِ is the genitive muḍāf ilayh.) ○ The Book of Allah: -> كِتَابُ اللهِ ○ The servant of Allah: -> عَبْدُ اللهِ ○ The help of Allah: -> نَصْرُ اللهِ ○ The one who establishes the prayer: -> مُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةِ (Tanwīn is removed from مُقِيمٌ: مُقِيمٌ → مُقِيمُ.) ○ The day of Friday: -> يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ ○ The Knower of the unseen: -> عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ ○ The believer's ascent: -> مِعْرَاجُ الْمُؤْمِنِ ○ The believer's prison: -> سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِنِ ○ The disbeliever's paradise: -> جَنَّةُ الْكَافِرِ ○ A traveller on a path: -> عَابِرُ سَبِيلٍ (سَبِيلٍ is indefinite, giving an indefinite meaning.) ○ The boy's two books: -> كِتَابَا الْوَلَدِ (The nūn of كِتَابَانِ is dropped.) ○ Zayd's two houses: -> بَيْتَا زَيْدٍ (The nūn of بَيْتَانِ is dropped.)
3. Arabic Translation Practice (Part Two)
● Study the remaining iḍāfah translations carefully: ○ The house of the Muslims: -> بَيْتُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ (الْمُسْلِمِينَ is a sound masculine plural in the genitive case.) ○ Lord of all the worlds: -> رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ. ○ King of all people: -> مَلِكُ النَّاسِ. ○ The signs of Allah: -> اٰيَاتُ اللهِ. ○ The Messenger of Allah: -> رَسُولُ اللهِ. ○ The blessing of Allah: -> نِعْمَةُ اللهِ. ○ The Fajr prayer: -> صَلَاةُ الْفَجْرِ. ○ The pillar of the religion: -> عِمَادُ الدِّينِ. ○ Love of the world: -> حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا (الدُّنْيَا is an alif maqṣūrah noun; its case ending is implicit.) ○ The book of the two boys: -> كِتَابُ الْوَلَدَيْنِ (الْوَلَدَيْنِ is dual in the genitive case.) ○ The Muslims of Madinah: -> مُسْلِمُو الْمَدِينَةِ (The nūn of مُسْلِمُونَ is dropped.) ○ The doors of the mosque: -> أَبْوَابُ الْمَسْجِدِ. ○ The windows of the room: -> نَوَافِذُ الْغُرْفَةِ (نَوَافِذُ is a broken plural muḍāf.)
4. Construction Practice Joining Muḍāf and Muḍāf Ilayh (Part One)
● Join the given muḍāf and muḍāf ilayh nouns to make iḍāfah constructions: 1. عَبْدُ + السَّمِيعُ: -> عَبْدُ السَّمِيعِ (السَّمِيعِ becomes the genitive muḍāf ilayh.) 2. مَزْرَعَةُ + اَلْآخِرَةُ: -> مَزْرَعَةُ الْآخِرَةِ. 3. رَسُولَانِ + اَللهُ: -> رَسُولَا اللهِ (The nūn of the dual muḍāf is dropped.) 4. صَاحِبَانِ + اَلسِّجْنُ: -> صَاحِبَا السِّجْنِ (The nūn of the dual muḍāf is dropped.) 5. إِخْوَانٌ + لُوْطٌ: -> إِخْوَانُ لُوطٍ. 6. نُورٌ + اَلسَّمٰوٰتُ وَالْأَرْضُ: -> نُورُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْأَرْضِ (السَّمٰوٰتِ is a sound feminine plural in the genitive case, with a kasrah.)
5. The Special Rule for a Diptote Muḍāf Ilayh
● We have learned that diptote nouns, including women's names, city names, Jahannam, and certain prophets' names, do not take a kasrah in the genitive case; they take a fatḥah instead. ● Therefore, when a diptote becomes a muḍāf ilayh, it is genitive with a fatḥah rather than a kasrah. Study these examples: 7. شَهْرُ + رَمَضَانُ: -> شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ (رَمَضَانُ is a diptote muḍāf ilayh, so it takes a fatḥah in the genitive case.) 8. نَارُ + جَهَنَّمُ: -> نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ (جَهَنَّمُ is a diptote muḍāf ilayh.) 9. إِخْوَةٌ + يُوسُفُ: -> إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ (يُوسُفُ is a diptote muḍāf ilayh.) 10. صُحُفٌ + إِبْرَاهِيمُ وَمُوسَى: -> صُحُفُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى (إِبْرَاهِيمَ is a diptote genitive with fatḥah, while مُوسَى is an alif maqṣūrah noun whose genitive ending is implicit.)
