Read the bilingual lesson for Present-Tense Verb: Signs and Three Paradigms and test your understanding with a focused quiz.
Lesson
1. The Present-Tense Verb
What will you learn? ● Understand what فعل مضارع expresses. ● Recognize its four initial signs: أ، ن، ت، ي. ● Read all 14 forms on the three source weights: يَفْعَلُ، يَفْعِلُ، يَفْعُلُ. ● Use person, gender, and number to choose the correct form.
2. What Does the Mudari Verb Express?
A فعل مضارع expresses an action or state in the present or future. Arabic uses the same verb form for both times; the context tells us whether “now” or “later” is intended. Present: هُوَ يَكْتُبُ الدَّرْسَ — He is writing the lesson. Future by context: the same form can mean “He will write the lesson” when a future context is supplied. Do not decide the time from the verb form alone; read the surrounding words and situation.
3. The Four Initial Signs
The source identifies four letters that begin the present-tense forms. Their distribution across the 14 slots is systematic. Sign Forms Where it is used ي 4 Three third-person masculine forms and the third-person feminine plural ت 8 Third-person feminine singular/dual and all six second-person forms أ 1 First-person singular ن 1 First-person plural The first letter is important, but the ending is also needed to identify the complete form.
4. Read the Beginning and the Ending
Some forms begin with the same letter but refer to different subjects. Compare: تَفْعَلُ can be third-person feminine singular or second-person masculine singular. تَفْعَلِينَ is second-person feminine singular. يَفْعَلْنَ is third-person feminine plural. أَفْعَلُ is first-person singular, while نَفْعَلُ is first-person plural. The prefix narrows the choice; the ending completes the identification.
5. Paradigm on Yaf'alu
Here the middle radical carries a fatḥah: يَفْعَلُ. Read each row across singular, dual, and plural. Person Gender Singular Dual Plural Third person Masculine يَفْعَلُ يَفْعَلَانِ يَفْعَلُونَ Third person Feminine تَفْعَلُ تَفْعَلَانِ يَفْعَلْنَ Second person Masculine تَفْعَلُ تَفْعَلَانِ تَفْعَلُونَ Second person Feminine تَفْعَلِينَ تَفْعَلَانِ تَفْعَلْنَ First person Masculine/Feminine أَفْعَلُ — نَفْعَلُ The dash in first-person dual is not a missing form: Arabic uses singular أَفْعَلُ and plural نَفْعَلُ here.
6. Paradigm on Yaf'ilu
Here the middle radical carries a kasrah: يَفْعِلُ. The prefixes and endings follow the same 14-slot arrangement. Person Gender Singular Dual Plural Third person Masculine يَفْعِلُ يَفْعِلَانِ يَفْعِلُونَ Third person Feminine تَفْعِلُ تَفْعِلَانِ يَفْعِلْنَ Second person Masculine تَفْعِلُ تَفْعِلَانِ تَفْعِلُونَ Second person Feminine تَفْعِلِينَ تَفْعِلَانِ تَفْعِلْنَ First person Masculine/Feminine أَفْعِلُ — نَفْعِلُ Compare يَفْعَلُ and يَفْعِلُ: the person/number framework stays the same, while the vowel on the middle radical changes.
7. Paradigm on Yaf'ulu
Here the middle radical carries a ḍammah: يَفْعُلُ. Again, the same 14 slots are used. Person Gender Singular Dual Plural Third person Masculine يَفْعُلُ يَفْعُلَانِ يَفْعُلُونَ Third person Feminine تَفْعُلُ تَفْعُلَانِ يَفْعُلْنَ Second person Masculine تَفْعُلُ تَفْعُلَانِ تَفْعُلُونَ Second person Feminine تَفْعُلِينَ تَفْعُلَانِ تَفْعُلْنَ First person Masculine/Feminine أَفْعُلُ — نَفْعُلُ Do not memorize 42 unrelated words. Learn one person/number framework, then notice whether the middle radical has fatḥah, kasrah, or ḍammah.
8. The Three Weights
The three source paradigms differ in the vowel on the middle radical. Weight Middle-radical vowel Simple example يَفْعَلُ Fatḥah هُوَ يَفْتَحُ الْبَابَ يَفْعِلُ Kasrah هُوَ يَضْرِبُ الْكُرَةَ يَفْعُلُ Ḍammah هُوَ يَكْتُبُ الدَّرْسَ The table compares pronunciation and form only; each example still has its own lexical meaning.
9. One Root, Different Subjects
Use the familiar verb يَكْتُبُ to see how the subject changes the form. هُوَ يَكْتُبُ الدَّرْسَ — He writes the lesson. أَنْتِ تَكْتُبِينَ الدَّرْسَ — You (feminine singular) write the lesson. أَنَا أَكْتُبُ الدَّرْسَ — I write the lesson. نَحْنُ نَكْتُبُ الدَّرْسَ — We write the lesson. The root meaning remains “write”; the prefix and ending identify the subject.
10. A Reliable Way to Identify a Form
Work in this order: 1. Read the initial sign: أ، ن، ت، ي. 2. Read the ending: singular, dual, or plural. 3. Decide third person, second person, or first person. 4. Check masculine or feminine where the paradigm distinguishes them. 5. Finally notice the middle-radical vowel to identify يَفْعَلُ، يَفْعِلُ، or يَفْعُلُ. This method is safer than guessing from the first letter alone.
11. Four Forms, Four Clear Meanings
يَفْعَلُونَ — they (masculine) do تَفْعَلِينَ — you (feminine singular) do أَفْعَلُ — I do نَفْعَلُ — we do Say the person and number before translating. This prevents confusion between forms that share an initial letter.
12. A Quick Check
Before naming a present-tense form, ask: 1. Does it describe present or future action according to context? 2. Which initial sign does it carry? 3. What does its ending show about number and gender? 4. Is it third person, second person, or first person? 5. Does the middle radical carry fatḥah, kasrah, or ḍammah? Read the complete form; do not rely on one letter alone.
