Lesson
1. What Will We Learn in This Level?
● In this section, we will learn how to change masculine nouns and adjectives into feminine forms. ● We will learn about men's names that are treated as masculine even though they end in round tāʾ. ● We will study regular ways of forming the feminine as well as irregular forms that do not follow the rule.
2. How to Form the Feminine from the Masculine
● Many masculine nouns and adjectives form the feminine in this way: ○ Give the final letter of the masculine noun fatḥah. ○ Add round tāʾ (ة) immediately after it. ● Examples: ○ صَالِحٌ (righteous man) → صَالِحَةٌ (righteous woman) ○ أُسْتَاذٌ (male teacher) → أُسْتَاذَةٌ (female teacher)
3. Irregular Feminine Forms
● Some masculine nouns do not use a regular grammar rule to form the feminine. They change irregularly: Masculine Meaning Feminine Meaning رَجُلٌ man اِمْرَأَةٌ woman وَلَدٌ boy بِنْتٌ girl عَرِيسٌ bridegroom عَرُوسٌ bride
4. Masculine Names Ending in Round Tāʾ (Exception)
● An exception to the rule (exception): ○ Do not assume that a word is feminine just because it ends in ة; some men's names and masculine usages also end in ة. ● Examples: ○ طَلْحَةُ (Ṭalḥah) | حُذَيْفَةُ (Ḥudhayfah) — these are men's personal names. ○ خَلِيفَةٌ (caliph) | عَلَّامَةٌ (great scholar) — despite the ة, these can refer to a masculine person.
5. Level Summary
● Many masculine nouns and adjectives become feminine by giving the final letter fatḥah and adding round tāʾ (ة). ● Some words, such as رَجُلٌ becoming اِمْرَأَةٌ and وَلَدٌ becoming بِنْتٌ, change irregularly. ● Do not assume that a word is feminine just because it ends in ة; some men's names and masculine usages also end in ة, such as طَلْحَةُ, حُذَيْفَةُ, خَلِيفَةٌ, and عَلَّامَةٌ.
