Lesson

1. The Imperative: Addressing Someone

The imperative verb is used when the speaker asks an addressed person to do something. اُنْصُرْ — help! (to one man) اُنْصُرِي — help! (to one woman) It is made from the six second-person forms of the imperfect verb.

2. Build It in Three Steps

Begin with a second-person imperfect form, then change it step by step. 1. Make the form jussive: final sukun or removal of inflectional nūn. 2. Remove the imperfect prefix تَ. 3. If the remaining word begins with a consonant cluster, add hamzat al-wasl so it can be pronounced. تَنْصُرُ ← تَنْصُرْ ← نْصُرْ ← اُنْصُرْ

3. Which Vowel Does Hamzat al-Wasl Take?

Look at the middle root letter in the imperfect verb. ● If it has ḍammah, begin the imperative with اُ: يَنْصُرُ ← اُنْصُرْ, يَكْرُمُ ← اُكْرُمْ. ● Otherwise, begin with اِ: يَفْتَحُ ← اِفْتَحْ, يَغْفِرُ ← اِغْفِرْ. Hamzat al-wasl is pronounced when speech begins with it and is not pronounced when joined to a preceding word. It helps pronunciation and is not an extra root letter.

4. Six Imperatives from ن ص ر

The six forms change with the addressee's number and gender. For masculine addressees: اُنْصُرْ — اُنْصُرَا — اُنْصُرُوا (one man, two men, a group of men). For feminine addressees: اُنْصُرِي — اُنْصُرَا — اُنْصُرْنَ (one woman, two women, a group of women). The dual form اُنْصُرَا is the same for masculine and feminine addressees. اللَّهُمَّ انْصُرْ مَنْ نَصَرَ دِينَ مُحَمَّدٍ — O Allah, help whoever helps the religion of Muhammad.

5. Notice the Endings

The ending tells you who is being addressed. اُنْصُرْ — one man: no added ending. اُنْصُرَا — two people: ا. اُنْصُرُوا — men: وا. اُنْصُرِي — one woman: ي. اُنْصُرْنَ — women: pronominal نَ.

6. The Pattern with اِفْتَحْ

يَفْتَحُ has fatḥah on its middle root letter, so the imperative begins with kasrah. اِفْتَحْ — اِفْتَحَا — اِفْتَحُوا اِفْتَحِي — اِفْتَحَا — اِفْتَحْنَ اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

7. Two More Complete Patterns

The same six-slot pattern works with اِغْفِرْ and اِرْحَمْ. غ ف ر: اِغْفِرْ — اِغْفِرَا — اِغْفِرُوا — اِغْفِرِي — اِغْفِرَا — اِغْفِرْنَ ر ح م: اِرْحَمْ — اِرْحَمَا — اِرْحَمُوا — اِرْحَمِي — اِرْحَمَا — اِرْحَمْنَ

8. Read the Supplications

In a supplication, an imperative expresses a respectful request. اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ O Allah, forgive me, my parents and the believers. رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ My Lord, forgive and have mercy; You are the best of those who show mercy.

9. Apply the Rule to the Exercise Roots

These singular forms let you check all ten exercise roots before making the other five addressed forms. RootImperativeRootImperativeع ب داُعْبُدْج ع لاِجْعَلْج ل ساِجْلِسْض ر باِضْرِبْش ر حاِشْرَحْذ ه باِذْهَبْح ل لاِحْلِلْر ج عاِرْجِعْش ر باِشْرَبْس م عاِسْمَعْ Now add the endings for dual, masculine plural, feminine singular and feminine plural.

10. A Reliable Checklist

Before accepting an imperative form, check four things. ● Did you begin from a second-person imperfect form? ● Did you remove its imperfect prefix? ● Did you apply the jussive ending? ● If hamzat al-wasl was needed, did you choose اُ only when the middle root letter of the imperfect has ḍammah? Finally, match the ending to the intended addressee.
