Lesson

1. Roots and the Six Basic Triliteral Babs

What will you learn? ● Distinguish a three-letter root from a four-letter root. ● Recognize a basic triliteral verb and a triliteral verb with added letters. ● Read the 3 past and 3 imperfect patterns. ● Learn the 6 well-known pattern pairings used here. ● Use a dictionary symbol or vowel mark to recover the imperfect form. ● Practise 42 roots without guessing from meaning alone.

2. Triliteral, Quadriliteral, Basic and Augmented

Count the root letters, not every visible letter. ● A root with 3 original letters is ثلاثی. ● A root with 4 original letters is رباعی. ● If the first past-tense form contains only the 3 root letters, it is ثلاثی مجرد. ● If the first past-tense form contains one or more letters in addition to those 3 root letters, it is ثلاثی مزید فیہ. According to this book, roughly 99% of verb roots are triliteral. Treat this as the book's approximation, not as a universal statistic.

3. The Three Past and Three Imperfect Patterns

Past patterns فَعَلَ، فَعِلَ، فَعُلَ Imperfect patterns يَفْعَلُ، يَفْعِلُ، يَفْعُلُ The difference is the vowel on عین کلمہ, the middle root position. For example, compare the middle vowel in نَصَرَ—يَنْصُرُ.

4. The Past Form Alone Is Not Enough

Past pattern Possible imperfect What to remember فَعُلَ يَفْعُلُ One established pairing فَعِلَ يَفْعَلُ یا يَفْعِلُ Two possibilities فَعَلَ يَفْعَلُ، يَفْعِلُ یا يَفْعُلُ Three possibilities

5. The Six Babs Used in This Book

6. How to Identify a Verb's Bab

Use both the past and the imperfect. 1. Separate the 3 root letters. 2. Read the middle vowel in the past. 3. Find the imperfect or its symbol in a reliable dictionary. 4. Match the pair to one of the 6 pattern pairs. A root may be used in more than one bab. Therefore, do not decide the bab from the meaning or past form alone. The same past form may occur with different imperfect vowels: this lesson shows حَسِبَ—يَحْسِبُ as the Bab Hasiba prototype and حَسِبَ—يَحْسَبُ under Bab Sami'a. Learn the complete pair from the dictionary. Worked example: د خ ل + symbol ن gives دَخَلَ—يَدْخُلُ.

7. Two Dictionary Notations

Method 1: mnemonic symbol عَلِمَ (س) means: use the pairing represented by symbol س, so the result is عَلِمَ—يَعْلَمُ. Method 2: imperfect middle vowel عَلِمَ (ـَـ) means: put fatḥah on the middle root position in the imperfect, again giving يَعْلَمُ. The letters ک، ن، ف، ض، س، ح are mnemonic symbols used in this book; do not assume every dictionary uses them.
