Lesson
1. What Will We Learn?
By the end of this level, you will be able to: ● define a verbal sentence. ● explain how a conjugated past form represents both an action and a pronominal doer. ● identify the corresponding doer pronoun in all 14 taught forms. ● distinguish an understood subject, an attached subject pronoun, and an explicit noun subject.
2. What Is a Verbal Sentence?
A sentence that begins with a verb is called a verbal sentence. The Arabic term is جُمْلَةٌ فِعْلِيَّةٌ. A verbal sentence contains an action and its doer. As the subject, the doer is nominative. It may be represented by a pronoun in the conjugated form, or it may appear as an explicit noun after the verb; examples include Zayd, two boys, a teacher, Fatimah, two girls, and women.
3. How One Form Carries a Doer
عَبَدَ is more than the bare idea ‘to worship.’ It is a conjugated past form meaning ‘he worshipped.’ The action is worshipping, while the hidden pronoun هُوَ identifies the doer. So we analyze it as: عَبَدَ = worshipped + hidden هُوَ The pronoun is understood from the form even though it is not written separately.
4. Read the Form, Then Identify Its Doer Pronoun
Some subjects are understood; others are attached to the verb. ● In عَبَدَ, the subject هُوَ is understood but not written. ● In خَرَجَا, dual ا is an attached nominative subject pronoun corresponding to هُمَا. ● In سَجَدُوا, واو الجماعة is attached and corresponds to هُمْ. ● In ذَهَبْنَ, نون النسوة is attached and corresponds to هُنَّ. Method: read the full form, inspect its ending, then state the corresponding separate pronoun.
5. Third Person: Masculine Forms
Past form Corresponding doer pronoun Easy meaning عَبَدَ هُوَ he worshipped خَرَجَا هُمَا the two men went out سَجَدُوا هُمْ the men prostrated
6. Third Person: Feminine Forms
Past form Corresponding doer pronoun Easy meaning شَرِبَتْ هِيَ she drank دَخَلَتَا هُمَا the two women entered ذَهَبْنَ هُنَّ the women went
7. Second Person: Masculine Forms
Past form Corresponding doer pronoun Who is addressed? خَلَقْتَ أَنْتَ one man مَرِضْتُمَا أَنْتُمَا two men جَلَسْتُمْ أَنْتُمْ several men
8. Second Person: Feminine Forms
Past form Corresponding doer pronoun Who is addressed? ضَحِكْتِ أَنْتِ one woman فَرِحْتُمَا أَنْتُمَا two women صَدَقْتُنَّ أَنْتُنَّ several women
9. The Two Speaker Forms
There are only two speaker forms here, so a table is unnecessary. قَرُبْتُ carries the attached subject pronoun ـْتُ, corresponding to أَنَا. It means: ‘I drew/came near.’ نَصَرْنَا carries the attached subject pronoun ـْنَا, corresponding to نَحْنُ. It means: ‘We helped.’ The attached ending ـْنَا is the subject pronoun of the speaker group ‘we.’
10. Useful Ending Clues
Use these clues to reason, not merely to memorize. ● ـَا in خَرَجَا points to two men being spoken about: هُمَا. ● ـُوا in سَجَدُوا points to men being spoken about: هُمْ. ● ـْنَ in ذَهَبْنَ points to women being spoken about: هُنَّ. ● endings built with ت often identify the person addressed or the speaker; read the vowel and the rest of the ending carefully. ● ـْنَا in نَصَرْنَا corresponds to نَحْنُ.
11. Beginner Check Before the Quiz
Ask yourself these 4 questions: 1. Does the sentence begin with a verb? Then it is a verbal sentence. 2. Which action does the past form express? 3. Is its subject understood, attached as a pronoun, or written as an explicit noun after the verb? 4. Which separate pronoun corresponds to the form? Common trap: Do not assume that every written ت represents the same doer. Compare شَرِبَتْ, خَلَقْتَ, ضَحِكْتِ, and قَرُبْتُ; their full endings and vowels are different.
