Lesson
1. Three Groups of Imperfect Forms
What will you learn? ● Why the imperfect paradigm is divided into three groups. ● Which of the fourteen grammatical slots belongs to each group. ● Why one written form may represent more than one slot. ● How to recognize the inflectional nūn in the second group. ● How to recognize the feminine-plural ending in the third group.
2. Why Three Groups Are Useful
The same particle does not affect every imperfect form in the same way. The past tense does not undergo this particular set of ending changes, but the imperfect does. The imperfect forms are therefore first grouped by their endings. For now, learn the three-group map; each group’s forms share the same kind of ending.
3. The Whole Map at a Glance
Think of the fourteen grammatical slots as three baskets. ● First group: five slots whose final root letter carries ḍammah and which have no inflectional nūn, such as يَفْعَلُ. ● Second group: seven slots represented by five written forms containing the final inflectional nūn, such as يَفْعَلَانِ and يَفْعَلُونَ. ● Third group: two feminine-plural slots ending in نَ: يَفْعَلْنَ and تَفْعَلْنَ. Fourteen slots do not mean fourteen different spellings: context and the pronoun can distinguish repeated forms.
4. First Group: Five Slots
These five slots have no final inflectional nūn. Form Pronoun Simple example يَفْعَلُ هُوَ هُوَ يَكْتُبُ تَفْعَلُ هِيَ هِيَ تَكْتُبُ تَفْعَلُ أَنْتَ أَنْتَ تَكْتُبُ أَفْعَلُ أَنَا أَنَا أَكْتُبُ نَفْعَلُ نَحْنُ نَحْنُ نَكْتُبُ The written form تَفْعَلُ occurs twice, but its subject changes with context.
5. One Form, Two Readings
Do not translate bare تَفْعَلُ without context. ● هِيَ تَكْتُبُ — She writes. Here تَفْعَلُ is third-person feminine singular. ● أَنْتَ تَكْتُبُ — You (one man) write. Here the same pattern is second-person masculine singular. The letters are the same, but the stated pronoun changes the grammatical slot and the translation.
6. Second Group: Forms with Inflectional Nun
Seven grammatical slots are represented by five written forms. The dual second-person form is shared by masculine and feminine addressees. The feminine third-person dual and both second-person dual slots also share the written form تَفْعَلَانِ.
7. What Is the Inflectional Nun?
First recognize the ending; then learn its name. In يَفْعَلَانِ, يَفْعَلُونَ and تَفْعَلِينَ, the final nūn belongs to the inflectional ending. This is called نونِ اعرابی—the inflectional nūn. It is not the feminine-plural nūn of يَفْعَلْنَ. Keep the two endings distinct when identifying the second and third groups.
8. How Context Explains Taf'alani
The written form stays the same; the pronoun tells you who acts. ● هُمَا تَكْتُبَانِ — Those two women write. ● أَنْتُمَا تَكْتُبَانِ — You two write. This can address two men or two women. Therefore تَفْعَلَانِ alone does not identify one unique slot. Read the pronoun or the surrounding sentence before translating.
9. Third Group: Feminine Plural
This group has only two forms, so a table is unnecessary. ● يَفْعَلْنَ is used for third-person feminine plural: هُنَّ يَكْتُبْنَ — Those women write. ● تَفْعَلْنَ is used for second-person feminine plural: أَنْتُنَّ تَكْتُبْنَ — You all (women) write. The nūn here is part of the feminine-plural ending, not the inflectional nūn of the second group.
10. A Reliable Recognition Method
Use the ending first, then the pronoun. 1. If the form ends like يَفْعَلُ، تَفْعَلُ، أَفْعَلُ، نَفْعَلُ, place it in the first group. 2. If it ends with the inflectional nūn in ـانِ، ـونَ، ـينَ, place it in the second group. 3. If it is يَفْعَلْنَ or تَفْعَلْنَ, place it in the third group. 4. For repeated written forms, use the pronoun or context to identify the exact slot. Together these checks complete the grouping of all fourteen slots.
