Three More Causes of Nasb

Read the bilingual lesson for Three More Causes of Nasb and test your understanding with a focused quiz.

Lesson

1. Three More Reasons for Nasb

The previous level taught one reason for nasb: the ism of particles such as إِنَّ. Now we will learn three more causes of nasb, each affecting a different grammatical role. - the khabar of مَا or لَا when it works like لَيْسَ - the ism of لَا that negates a whole class - a mudaf noun being addressed after يَا The same word لَا can perform two different jobs, so its sentence must be read carefully.

2. When Ma or La Works Like Laysa

In the simple examples here, مَا and لَا can follow the case pattern of لَيْسَ. - their ism is marfu, or occupies the position of raf if it is mabni - their khabar is mansub Compare the model: لَيْسَ زَيْدٌ طَوِيلًا. زَيْدٌ is the marfu ism; طَوِيلًا is the mansub khabar. Do not assume that every occurrence of مَا or لَا has this function.

3. Read Ma Hatha Basharan

مَا هَذَا بَشَرًا - مَا works like لَيْسَ in this example. - هَذَا is its ism. Because it is mabni, its ending does not visibly change; it occupies the position of raf. - بَشَرًا is its khabar, so it is mansub with fathah. The mansub target is the khabar, not the ism.

4. A Simple La and Laysa Comparison

These two sentences share the same case relationship. لَا رَجُلٌ صَالِحًا - رَجُلٌ is the marfu ism of لَا. - صَالِحًا is its mansub khabar. لَيْسَ زَيْدٌ طَوِيلًا - زَيْدٌ is the marfu ism of لَيْسَ. - طَوِيلًا is its mansub khabar. In both examples, the second descriptive noun is the mansub element.

5. Do Not Reverse Ism and Khabar

The easiest mistake is to remember “something becomes mansub” but choose the wrong noun. In مَا الطَّالِبُ غَائِبًا: - ask who or what the statement is about: الطَّالِبُ, the marfu ism - ask what is being stated: غَائِبًا, the mansub khabar Therefore مَا الطَّالِبَ غَائِبٌ reverses the relationship taught here.

6. La That Negates the Whole Class

لَا النَّافِيَةُ لِلْجِنْسِ makes the negation cover every member of the class named by its ism. In the simple singular examples here, its ism is built on fathah in the position of nasb and appears without tanwin. لَا طَالِبَ غَائِبٌ There is no absent student. طَالِبَ is its ism, built on fathah in the position of nasb, without tanwin; غَائِبٌ is its khabar. This لَا does not use the same visible ism/khabar endings as the لَا in the previous example.

7. La Rayba Fihi

لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ - لَا negates the whole class. - رَيْبَ is its ism, built on fathah in the position of nasb, without tanwin. - فِيهِ completes the statement as the khabar. Do not read رَيْبَ as the marfu ism pattern رَجُلٌ from لَا رَجُلٌ صَالِحًا. The two uses of لَا are different.

8. La Ilaha Illa Allah

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ For this level, focus on the first relationship only: - لَا negates the whole class. - إِلَهَ is its ism, built on fathah in the position of nasb, without tanwin. - Its visible fathah has no tanwin. The construction after إِلَّا is not being analyzed in this level. This keeps the assessment limited to the rule already taught.

9. One La, Two Different Jobs

Read the endings and the grammatical relationship, not only the word لَا. Working like laysa: لَا رَجُلٌ صَالِحًا The ism رَجُلٌ is marfu; the khabar صَالِحًا is mansub. Negating the whole class: لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ The ism رَيْبَ is built on fathah in the position of nasb and appears without tanwin. These are two simple cases, so a direct comparison is clearer than a table.

10. The Mudaf Noun Being Addressed

Munada is the noun being called or addressed. When that noun is mudaf, it is mansub in the examples here. يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ عَبْدَ is the mansub munada and mudaf. اللَّهِ is the majrur mudaf ilayh. يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ أَرْحَمَ is the mansub munada and mudaf. الرَّاحِمِينَ is the majrur mudaf ilayh. A neutral practice model is يَا طَالِبَ الْعِلْمِ: طَالِبَ is the mansub target.

11. Three Causes, Three Targets

The key question is not merely “which noun has fathah?” Ask which grammatical role causes nasb. CauseMansub targetExampleمَا / لَا working like لَيْسَkhabarمَا هَذَا بَشَرًالَا negating the whole classism of لَالَا رَيْبَ فِيهِmudaf noun after يَاmunada mudafيَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ Name the cause first; then identify the mansub noun.
