Read the bilingual lesson for فَعَلَ Vocabulary: Complete the Remaining Verbs and test your understanding with a focused quiz.
Lesson
1. What Will We Learn?
By the end of this level, you will be able to: ● read 12 more fully vocalized past-tense verbs on فَعَلَ. ● explain the natural meaning of each verb. ● use familiar past-tense endings to understand new forms. ● recover the basic verb from a changed form.
2. The Pattern Is Shared, but Meanings Differ
Read the form and learn the meaning separately All 12 basic verbs have the pattern فَعَلَ, with fatḥah on the middle root letter. This shared pattern does not determine one shared meaning. Memory aid: The 4 groups in this level organize related meanings only. They are not new grammatical categories.
3. Group 1: Making, Raising, and Gathering
Basic verb Natural meaning Simple applied form جَعَلَ he made جَعَلْنَا — we made رَفَعَ he raised رَفَعَتْ — she raised حَشَرَ he gathered حَشَرُوا — the men gathered
4. Understand the Ending with the Verb
جَعَلْنَا = جَعَلَ + ـْنَا The verb gives the meaning ‘made’; ـْنَا tells us that the doer is ‘we.’ رَفَعَتْ = رَفَعَ + ـَتْ The ending identifies one female doer: ‘she raised.’ حَشَرُوا = حَشَرَ + ـُوا The ending identifies a masculine plural third-person doer: ‘the men gathered.’
5. Group 2: Heedlessness and Harmful Actions
Basic verb Natural meaning Simple applied form غَفَلَ he became heedless غَفَلَتْ — she became heedless ضَرَبَ he struck ضَرَبْتُ — I struck ظَلَمَ he acted unjustly ظَلَمُوا — the men acted unjustly
6. Do Not Confuse the Meanings
غَفَلَ describes becoming heedless or unaware; it does not mean striking someone. ضَرَبَ names the act of striking. ظَلَمَ describes acting unjustly or wronging someone. It is not simply another word for every act of striking. The forms غَفَلَتْ, ضَرَبْتُ, and ظَلَمُوا keep these basic meanings while their endings change the doer.
7. Group 3: Effort, Reaching, and Success
Basic verb Natural meaning Simple applied form نَجَحَ he succeeded نَجَحْنَا — we succeeded بَلَغَ he reached بَلَغْتُ — I reached جَهَدَ he strove جَهَدُوا — the men strove
8. Three Related Ideas, Three Different Verbs
جَهَدَ: effort It tells us that someone strove or made an effort. بَلَغَ: reaching It tells us that someone arrived at or reached something. نَجَحَ: success It tells us that someone succeeded. Effort, reaching, and success can be connected in real life, but the verbs do not have the same meaning.
9. Group 4: Benefit, Reduction, and Leaving
Basic verb Natural meaning Simple applied form نَفَعَ he brought benefit نَفَعُوا — the men brought benefit نَقَصَ he reduced نَقَصَتْ — she reduced تَرَكَ he left something تَرَكْنَا — we left something
10. Keep the Basic Meaning While Reading the Ending
نَفَعُوا نَفَعَ supplies ‘brought benefit,’ and ـُوا identifies the men as the doers. نَقَصَتْ نَقَصَ supplies ‘reduced,’ and ـَتْ identifies one female doer. تَرَكْنَا تَرَكَ supplies ‘left something,’ and ـْنَا identifies ‘we’ as the doers.
11. Recover the Basic Verb Step by Step
Applied form Remove the ending Basic verb جَعَلْنَا remove ـْنَا جَعَلَ رَفَعَتْ remove ـَتْ رَفَعَ جَهَدُوا remove ـُوا جَهَدَ ضَرَبْتُ remove ـْتُ ضَرَبَ
12. A New Learner's Checklist
Before the quiz, check these 4 abilities: ● I can read each basic verb with its middle fatḥah. ● I know that a shared pattern does not create a shared meaning. ● I can explain the difference between effort, reaching, and success. ● I can use ـُوا, ـَتْ, ـْتُ, and ـْنَا to identify the doer and recover the basic verb.
